Win XP - PSPX5 New Install - can't view some thumbnails ...
Win XP computer.
Previously ran PSP 9 and PSP X1. All was FINE with thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
Purchased and installed PSP X5
It seem to be doing some hatchet job on pspimage files that I've had stored for several YEARS on this computer. These are files I have NOT opened in X5.
They are showing up as icons for PSP X5 although they were created with earlier versions of the program.
I NEVER authorized any type of conversion. Why would I?
So why is this happening? How do I STOP IT.
And how do I get the view back without having to install any other program since the view was FINE before installing X5?
Thank you
Safira

Re: Win XP - PSPX5 New Install - can't view some thumbnails
So you have some psp files that were made with 9 or X1 and they are now showing as being associated with the X5 program?
In windows showing details , right click the psps file and choose properties , In general properties there is a section that says Open With and that will probably say X 5, Choose Change and direct it to which version of Psp you want it to open with.
By the way this association of files means that when you double click the file it will open up in that program. You could still drag and drop (my preferred method) or copy and paste into the workspace of whatever PSP program you want.
NOte that a .psp file created in X5 will probably not be backward compatible to 9 or X1.

To save a file for use in an earlier version in X5: Save as (F12 key) look under Options.hartpaul wrote: NOte that a .psp file created in X5 will probably not be backward compatible to 9 or X1.
You can select any version back to PSP5.

I doubt whether the files have been touched (have you checked the date/time modified).
It's much more likely that Windows is now using X5 to generate the thumbnail view.
Installing X5 will have associated the extension .pspimage with X5, it won't have changed the contents of those files though.

You can also associate the PSPImage to the version of PaintShop Pro that you prefer. To reassociate the PSPIMage files just follow these steps - http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... r-pictures

Re: Win XP - PSPX5 New Install - can't view some thumbnails
Not a computer newbie here.
Windows would NOT associate ALL .pspimage files with X5 unless instructed to by the install program.
THIS SHOULD NOT BE DONE.
Changing all of the associations DID NOTHING. Corel is monkeying around with stuff it does not have the right to.
I did a System Restore dated before the X5 install and got MY system settings back. (Which is why you should ALWAYS make a Restore Point before any install - in the event a program does sneaky and underhanded crap like this you can get back what you want without touching the program)
No system settings should be changed "just because".
Corel cannot stamp out the name of Jasc with this underhanded behavior.
If it does it again I will uninstall X5.
What a crappy way to do business.

This did not work and was the first thing I tried to do even before posting here.hartpaul wrote:So you have some psp files that were made with 9 or X1 and they are now showing as being associated with the X5 program?

Drag and drop - yeah, been doing that for years, not the problem however.
I want to view the files in Explorer which is light years faster than any graphics program built in browser. I don't use Adobe Bridge because it's so slow and takes huge amounts of space for thumbnails.
This program should ask if you want files indexed and/or loaded into an image browser. IT DOES NOT. That's just lame and lazy programming. I really hate that it just starts and does all that automatically before you can even get into the Preferences. What a waste.

Re: Win XP - PSPX5 New Install - can't view some thumbnails
I have been using Paint Shop Pro since version 4.12. I have literally THOUSANDS of image files. There is no way I would either manually, or using a utility to change all of them.Joelle wrote:To save a file for use in an earlier version in X5: Save as (F12 key) look under Options.hartpaul wrote: NOte that a .psp file created in X5 will probably not be backward compatible to 9 or X1.

X5 should have kept it's dirty fingers out of my system.

Of course, what do you think? That I fell off the turnip wagon yesterday? Sure sounds like it.AdrianW wrote:I doubt whether the files have been touched (have you checked the date/time modified).
Did you NOT read this line in my original message?

The problem is that it made them unviewable, probably because the X series developers just ASSume that everyone is using Win 7 and above. Pretty bad judgement, OR, they are plain lazy and didn't want to develop to embrace legacy systems.AdrianW wrote:It's much more likely that Windows is now using X5 to generate the thumbnail view.

X1 did NOT make changes to my system like X5 did. Therefore X5 has design flaws, or overbearingly arrogant developers. Both are wrong.

Thanks but no thanks.Abiel Corel NA wrote:You can also associate the PSPImage to the version of PaintShop Pro that you prefer. To reassociate the PSPIMage files just follow these steps - http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... r-pictures
Have no need for a pictorial tutorial to find my way around a computer and it's programs.
To all that answered, I know that most of you aren't employees of Corel, and that you're trying to give good advice.
I really think that System Restore - for system settings problems - should be the thing that you offer first.
I haven't had problems with a program install in so long that I'd forgotten about it. I guess Corel just doesn't hire seasoned and experienced developers or, they really don't give a crap about this program so the Quality Assurance just isn't being done for it.
It really pisses me off that something that was a stellar program is being turned into a load of crap and that the name is being dragged through the mud by Corel's bad faith.
