PSP X5 process still running after program close
I have just installed PSP X5 and have found a couple of problems.
First one is when I close PSP the process still runs for a good 10 minutes afterwards and consumes a lot of system memory. I found this by accident after I closed PSP X5 and then decided to start it again. It wouldn't open until I closed the previous process.
Second, when I start PSP after the splash screen and the program interface appear I have to wait about 1 minute 40 seconds before I can do anything with the program.
Any ideas on how to improve this situation because at the moment I don't consider this acceptable?
I'm running Windows 7 32 bit with 4Gb of RAM, other than browser and email no other big program is running inthe background

Re: PSP X5 process still running after program close
My first suggestion is to turn off the Scratch Disk operation.
Go to File -> Preferences -> General Program Preferences
Under Displaying and Caching turn off the Scratch Disk operation.
Second thing, do you use the Manage Mode at all? Corel continues to improve upon the Manage Mode for organizing photos but its cataloging process still causes problems for people as it can consume a lot of resources.
If you don't intend to use the Manage mode I suggest you turn off cataloging. Again found in the General Program Preferences.

Also under General Program Preferences / Manage - there's a checkbox for "Allow cataloging to complete after exiting the application", maybe a good idea to uncheck that one.

Since I took that screen shot I've shut down my PC and restarted it. I started PSP X5 and it appears to be searching my hard drive for something, my drive is being hammered, my processor is at 100% the cooling fan is going full blast and as I try to type this is appears in stages. i.e. I type 10 letters only three appear then there's a pause before the rest appear and it's onlt taken 5 minutes 25 seconds before I can actually use PSP.

I did a complete re-install of PSP X5 without any of the additional content that you can download. It's now working as it should, once it's open I can use it straight away and when I shut it down it really does shut down. The process does not stay behind for 5 minutes like it was doing before.

Re: PSP X5 process still running after program close
It's hard to say this far after the fact what was causing the problem, but I don't think it was the additional content -- I've got all of them installed (including the KPT Collection), as well as several 3rd party plugins, and when I close PSPX5, it's gone.

That's the next step today. I'm going to start re-installing all of the content and after each install see if it makes a difference.

I searched around in the General Program Preferences for 'turn off cataloging' and didn't see it.LeviFiction wrote:My first suggestion is to turn off the Scratch Disk operation.

I was looking for the specific words 'Turn off catalog'; perhaps its different wording.
Where exactly is this since I'm not using it and I would like to stop the delay factor also.

In the General Preferences under "Manage" you'll see two areas: 1) Thumbnail images and 2) Excluded Items.
Under Thumbnail images uncheck "Allow cataloging to complete after exiting the application"
Under Excluded Items Click on FIle Format Exclusions and exclude all file formats. Then click on "Uncataloged Folders" and add in the folders you don't want PSP to catalog.

Re: PSP X5 process still running after program close
Well it looks like my problem has been solved by doing the un-install and then re-installing. PSP X5 starts straight away and when it shuts down it really shuts down. No more leaving a process behind.
Thanks to evryone who tried to help me resolve this issue.

Re: PSP X5 process still running after program close
Hi Levi, is there a way to completely turn off cataloging? I don't want any of my folders to be cataloged but I can't figure out how to exclude all of them. Just putting the C: drive or my user account doesn't work. I work with thousands of images and when it cataloges them the thumbs folder (under appdata) is HUGE.LeviFiction wrote:In the General Preferences under "Manage" you'll see two areas: 1) Thumbnail images and 2) Excluded Items.

Thanks for your time!
