external edits show up sporadically

I've got Gimp set up as my external editor. When I export an image from AS and edit in Gimp, I save the file, close gimp, and about 35% of the time the edited version will show up in the browser window in AS. It's not a ratings / filter issue, as I have turned off all of the filters, and the edited versions are still only showing up sometimes. Any thoughts on this?
