PSPPThumbShellExt64.dll crashes My Pictures folder

Post by RobOppen »

If I install Paint Shop Pro X5 (PSP) and its service pack in Windows 8, then Windows Explorer (WE) crashes whenever I navigate to the "My Pictures" folder (or a sub-folder of My Pictures). WE displays the folder for about 2 seconds - then it just goes away - as though the window had been closed. Actually WE crashes. Even if I exit PSP the same thing happens. But if I un-install PSP, then it goes back to normal, that is, I can then browse My Pictures and its sub-folders with WE.

When I look in Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center\Reliability Monitor
I see "Windows Explorer Stopped working ..."
A right-click and "View Technical Details" then shows the following in Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center\Problem Details

I am running 64-bit Windows 8 Pro on an ASUS slate tablet EP121.
I run WE with the option "Launch folder windows in a separate process".

During the PSP install, I clicked on check for updates, and it down loaded the PSP X5 service pack. I then exited PSP and it Installed the service pack.

When PSP was installed, I tried the PSP command that shows a file in Windows Explorer, and that seemed to work fine. But using Windows Explorer normally always crashed.

I submitted a report to Corel support.

It's not too surprising that an application-supplied system DLL could have a conflict with a newly released operating system. You did the right thing to supply the details to Corel.

A reinstall appears to have fixed it.

First I uninstalled PSP and Rebooted.
And verified that the problem was gone, i.e. I could browse My Pictures folder.

Then I installed PSP again. And it seems to be OK.

This time I ran PSP (and edited a picture) before installing SP1 (no problem)
then it auto installed SP1 (still no problem).

Also this time I delayed registering it - I did not give it my email address to register- because it wont let me copy and paste it in and I felt it was too long to bother with. But I later did register it.

[Last time I registered it during the install and clicked on "check for updates" so I installed SP1 immediately after installing PSP and before actually using it]. Probably not a significant difference, but who knows?

In any case, if you experience this (where My Pictures folder appears to close itself) then try uninstalling and re-installing.

Also tell Corel support - they had a quick fix patch that might help - but I have not tried it - at least not yet.

However I experienced a different problem - PSP would not start. It did once, but then it wouldn't.
I signed out (logged off) of Windows 8 and back in - and then PSP was able to run OK.

So for now, PSP is running OK under Win8 on my Slate.

This is happening for me with windows 7 64 and PSP X3
does not matter if the app is closed or open.

But not with every folder. Seems that folder (or it's sub) has a very short and wide .png and .pspimg files with transparency.
Corel shold figure out the rest and fix this

I can reproduce the crash of explorer. New install of PSP X3 does not solve the issue.

Today I changed the size of a .pspimage-file to 32x5000 pixel. Before it was 32x4000 pixel. After that change the explorer crashes when open this folder in explorer with file-preview is active. The pure file list works fine.

So there could be a buffer overrun or something else. But there is no support for X3 any longer :(
