How do I alternate between scratch and object removal?

Post by Athena »

Using PaintShop Pro on Windows 7: I am trying to restore an old photo that I scanned as a TIF. When I open the file, I can use the Scratch Remover tool without any difficulty. Once I switch to Object Remover though, I cannot go back to the Scratch Remover -- the Object selection stays active and even though I can drag the scratch tool, it won't do anything.

What am I doing wrong? How can I kill the Object Remover?

Thank You.

If the selection is still active you need to turn off the selection before continuing. You can do this by going to the Selections menu and choosing "Select None" or by hitting Ctrl + D.

The object remover tool simply uses selections, it doesn't create its own special type of selection. This way you can create a selection using any other tool and then use the object remover to select a source and remove the selected object. But as a result you have to specifically deselect the selected area to continue working on the rest of the image.

Thank you. I guess that makes sense...sort of.

I added the "No Selections" button to the main toolbar so at least I can get to it easily. I tried to add it to the bar for the actual Object Remover tool but that wasn't allowed. I don't understand the point of activating the "Customize" action for the specific toolbar if the user really cannot customize the specific toolbar.

As it turns out, the Object Remover may be more work than it's worth. When I'm trying to remove a blemish, I want an auto-fill to blend with the surrounding area, not a complicated manual cloning processes. Defaulting to a giant rectangle that is in no way related to the area being removed is not at all helpful.

I've had at least 5 versions of PaintShop Pro now and I don't think it's improved at all in this respect. I've avoided using X4 because it seems so convoluted but I really have no choice since it's the only reasonably priced editor I've found that won't destroy the metadata I've added with my photo organizer.

Depending on the size of the area the blemish remover might be better. Even if it's pretty big you can usually remove it in a few clicks. I once saw a wonderful display of someone removing a tree-trunk using this method.

As for customizing the Tool Options. The Tool options is not a toolbar. It's a palette. As far as I know of the palettes only the Layers Palette has any sort of customizable options.
