Recommendations on build in audio filter for interview?

As stated in different but related post: I am struggling with bad audio on some interviews (Nikon D90 with crappy build-in microphone).
I am trying to keep as much as possible of the voice (its natural character etc) and killing everything else.
Filters such as NewBlue “Audio Polish”, “Cleaner”, “Noise Fader” is mostly resulting in the person sounding like a robot, as speaking from within a cardboard box etc.
“Hiss reduction” have a good effect though - but I am not quite there yet.
Any experiences, recommendation or general rules on thumb on the build in filters? I know I won't get crispy hi-fi from a crappy original, and for this project I an not going to do anything in external sound editors etc, but stil...
