Re: Place an image in text
I can think of a couple options.
Option 1:
This will put your text on a new layer and you can delete the background (flag image) layer.
Option 2:
Option 1:
- Open an image of the flag you want to use
Click the text tool
On the text toolbar set "Create As" to" Selection"
Type your text (the word Vancouver)
This will put your text on a new layer and you can delete the background (flag image) layer.
Option 2:
- Open an image of the flag you want to use
Open a new image where you will put your text
Click on the Background swatch on the Materials Palette
Click on the Pattern tab
Find your flag image, adjust the scale and select it
Type your text

Re: Place an image in text
I never thought of actually typing the text with a pattern. Great idea. However, it only works with either Vector text or Floating text, not with Selection. With Selection all you get is a selection marquee.

Re: Place an image in text
Thank you Kathy for your tutorial and LindaSue for your suggestion. Is it possible to position the text over a certain area of the flag or am I asking too much? I saw the original effect in a slideshow but it was done in Photoshop

When I try I am getting the first letters all in black with a few coloured in the centre of the flag.
Further help required I am afraid

Re: Place an image in text
Probably the easiest way would be to use Selection text as Kathy suggested. First, promote the flag image to a raster layer then create your text selection directly on the flag image. Move the selection marquee so that it's positioned where you want it over the flag. To do this, right-click using the Move tool to move the selection marquee. Invert the selection (Selections > Invert) and press the Delete key to remove that excess background from the flag image.

By the way, I took a quick look at that Photoshop tutorial and it's way more complicated to do with Photoshop than it is to do the same thing in PSP.

Re: Place an image in text
Here's an example using the method I posted. I duplicated the flower photo layer just so that you could see how it looked before I cut out the text from it.

Re: Place an image in text
If it helps, and you're a tinkerer, you don't have to create the text as a selection. You can create the text as a normal vector. Turn off the fill and use a light border so you can picture where it would be. This allows you to constantly move, edit, rewrite, the text until you have an option you consider perfect.
Turn the fill for the text back on for this next step. If you don't the selection won't work quite right.
Then with the text selected go to the menu and select Selections -> From Vector Object.
This will create a selection in the shape of your text. Hide the text layer you can now create a mask or delete the areas you don't want.

Re: Place an image in text
Actually, it's not that more complicated; and the beauty and power of the PS method is that the text mask remains as text and can be re-worded, re-sized, re-positioned, etc., and the image fill simply accommodates those changes.LindaSue wrote:By the way, I took a quick look at that Photoshop tutorial and it's way more complicated to do with Photoshop than it is to do the same thing in PSP.
Coming from Photoshop Elements as I am, the most important feature I miss in PSP is the ability to use any vector object (including text) as a "clipping mask". It's hard to overstate the power and flexibility of that method, which retains the sharp edges of the masking vector shape when re-sized, etc.

Thank you very much everyone. I appreciate the help and the illustrations. I am going to have fun with this one. I want to use the end result as title slides for slideshows.

Re: Place an image in text
Of course there are more complicated ways to do this with PSP as well. You could make copies of the text layers, create a mask, get selections from the mask or from vector text and save to an alpha channel for future editing, etc. Rosemary said she was a PSP newbie so I didn't want to make it too complicated for her.photodrawken wrote:Actually, it's not that more complicated; and the beauty and power of the PS method is that the text mask remains as text and can be re-worded, re-sized, re-positioned, etc., and the image fill simply accommodates those changes.LindaSue wrote:By the way, I took a quick look at that Photoshop tutorial and it's way more complicated to do with Photoshop than it is to do the same thing in PSP.
