.WAV file won't play in VSx4

Post by Mark Swanson »

I'm making some music videos, and I thought I'd get the best audio quality using .WAV files instead of MP3 files. Trouble is, when I load a .WAV into my audio track, all I get is a bunch of noise and loud hiss. An MP3 file works just fine. If I play the "clip" in the preview window, each file will play just fine, but the problem shows itself when I play the "project" in the preview window.
Is this happening because my computer has choked on all the data, and it's too much for it to handle? Am I stuck with using the MP3 files in my projects?

It has been found in the past that VideoStudio has problems with .wav files produced by some codecs. The problem can be solved for many people by creating the .wav files using a different software programme,

If mp3 files work OK for you in VideoStudio then why not use them.

I'd hoped not to use them because the quality of MP3 files is not as good as the quality of a WAV file. I am a songwriter and performer and I have spent a lot of time writing and recording my songs so I didn't want to settle for a lower quality at the end of the process.
I use Pro Tools to create my .WAV files. I'll use MP3 files if I have to- but was hoping for better. Thanks for your reply!

What are the specs of your wav file?
Can you upload a very small one for us to look at/test with?

How did you create the WAV files or seprated it from the video? If you used another program, then you may need to go back to contact that other program in order to see if they provide a codec for your computer.

You can also download other codec that VS X5 uses.
Here are some of the codecs that you may want to install.
RealPlayer: http://www.real.com/
DivX: http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack
XviD: http://downloads.xvid.org/downloads/xvidcore-1.3.2.zip
Windows Media Player: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... dia-player or just download the Windows Encoder at http://www.microsoft.com/expression/pro ... rview.aspx

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
I used Pro Tools, an Avid program for editing and recording audio to create the WAV file. I am pretty new to using VSx4, and haven't installed any codecs That didn't come with this program. I don't know where to start to see what codec I would need for a WAV file that was made with Pro Tools...I guess I'll have to do a little looking around!

If you have Pro Tools on the same computer, then the codec will already be there. And in any case wave files are bog standard audio files...

Hmm, thanks Ken. I use Pro Tools on a Mac, and not the same PC I run VSx4 on. And sorry to be a dimwit but I don't know what the rest of your message means!

Maybe 'bog standard' is a term used in Australia, NZ and perhaps the UK. But it means that it is the absolute standard for an audio file. You can't get more standard than it. And any computer will have the avi codec installed on it. So even if Pro Tools is on one computer, but produces files which are called wav, then any other computer with the wav codec should be able to read that file since it is a standard file. However, I confess I don't know if there are any differences between Mac and PC wav files, though I doubt it.

Only things I can find, not being a mac/pro tools user, is that the latest version of pro tools changes the header info compared to older versions. This has caused many programmes to not work with the newly produced files.
Which version of pro tools are you using?
Maybe using a pro tools forum to see if a solution has been found yet may be the best way forward?
