Paint Shop Pro on Windows 8

Post by AdrianW »

Is anyone else running Paint Shop Pro on Windows 8?

If you are - can you please test this for me:
  • Open two images into the Edit workspace.
  • Switch between the two images by clicking on the tabs.
Does it work for you? Performing the above steps for me always causes PSP to freeze.

(I'm using PSP X5, but I also tried X4 and it hangs in the same way as well).

Yes, I installed PSP X4 on a HP Pavilion DM1, so far no problem in using the program.

Is your device a tablet or notebook? What version of Windows 8 are you using?

Windows 8 Pro on a desktop.

It also freezes in Edit mode, by dragging a toolbar out of the UI and then attempting to snap it back in to the UI.

I have an open call with Support, and they've suggested various simple things (like emptying my temp folder and ensuring no videos are in Pictures).

I've tried resetting the program (holding shift whilst starting it). I've tried a full uninstall and reinstall (including applying SP1 and the hotfix that support made available). But it always hangs on me when clicking between open images.

It's strange because it was working fine at first, but then about three weeks ago I started having these issues. I thought it was caused by a Windows update, support even suggested rolling back the windows update - but that made no difference.

I also have no problems with Windows 8. Though I haven't run Windows update yet. So we'll see if that continues.

Hi. I just upgraded to Windows 8 and I use PSPX5. I just tested and had no problems going back & forth between the images in tabbed mode.

Did you keep your programs when you upgraded or did you do a clean install?

I first did the upgrade on Tuesday. I didn't want to do a clean install because I had just completely started from scratch with my computer 2 months ago. But I found problems with updates not installing and it was really slow. So Wednesday morning I did a clean install and now everything is working great. Just an idea...

Yes, I've done multiple clean installs.

Yesterday, I ran the new Windows Refresh process that is part of Windows 8. It cleans out everything, but keeps all your files and settings. I had to install all my programs again (but I was expecting that). So, I installed PSP first, and it still has the problem.

That's three of you so far that aren't having problems - I'm not sure whether that's good or not. I guess I'm less likely to get a fix if it's only me having the issue. It must be something with my specific setup - very annoying.

I was thinking on upgrade my windows 7 to 8, but I have some questions, in windows upgrade assistent, it say that My Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 isn´t comatible, and tell me to pay for 4.0, this is correct? And anyone could upgrade without need to make a clear upgrade and still have his (or her) Paint Shop Pro 5 working ok?

This is a good question and should be put to the Corel PSP development team. PSPX5 and all the inclusion that people paid extra for should work on Win8.

Hi Sir, this is PM of PaintShop Pro. Basically we cannot duplicate your problem here as other user replied. May I have your help to follow up with attached doc to generate Crash Dump back to us? Please install PSPX5, update to SP1 and then start this flow. Before you send this crash dump to us, please do not forget to add quick description for reference. Thx.

Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0 can work well with WIN8 is for sure. The reason is that Corel can bundle it with Ultimate pack. I think you don't need to worry about the case. :)

Recently I tried running X5 in a different user account (same machine, same install of PSP X5) and I had no freezes at all. So, I'm guessing something about my profile was messed up. Even though I performed complete uninstalls and reinstalls, the app would still freeze.

Considering it was working in another account, I decided to reinstall Windows 8 and start with a clean slate. I installed PSP X5 first and it worked fine, I've been gradually installing all my other software (like Office, iTunes, codecs, chrome, keepass, etc, etc), and still X5 continues to work fine. Windows Updates are up to date as well.

Hopefully it'll continue this way.

I made the upgrade, and it works without problems.
