Question on After Shot Pro

Post by Moldmaker »

Hi everybody,

I have a Nikon DSLR and I am interested in using ASP. I have one question that I did not find an answer for:
Does ASP support information that the camera writes in the RAW files, such as lens distortion correction, light falloff correction or Nikon's "picture control" settings?
I understand that ASP has its own lens correction database. Does this mean that I should switch off the lens correction in the camera, or is this information ignored completely by ASP?
Thank you for helping.

Mm.

I'm not a ASP power user and I may not be able to answer all your question but I bet you'll the answer when you use the program, so I suggest that you download the trial version and see for your self.

You can go to http://pnoy.me/coreltrials to download the trial version.

ASP does not automatically make lens corrections, which are written to the raw files, from my Panasonic G3 (micro 4/3rds). This is a know requirement for micro4/3rds cameras but I am not aware of a similar requirement for Nikon DSLR cameras.
It is my understanding that, Lens correction features in ASP, Lightroom, Capture One, DxO etc are created to correct for limitations in lens design, and these need to be designed specific to lens/camera body.

The corrections for my G3 are made automatically when processed in Lightroom, Capture One Express and Qimage Ultimate to name a few of the other raw processing software I use.

Hi,

as far as i know ASP or other Products can`t use this informations. The most manufacturer don`t release this informations and they don`t use Open Raw. http://www.openraw.org/

Automatic Lens Correction: Maybe you can try it and write something in here ;-)

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all the answers.

So I downloaded the trial version which installs and runs smoothly under Linux (very nice!). Just to find out that my camera is not supported yet. It is a Nikon D600 and I was very sure that the NEF file format is identical to the D800, but it isn't. Too bad. And the newest ASP Beta does not support it either.

Well, at least I was able to test ASP with some color slide scans in the TIFF format, and I liked the software instantly, and it is working fast!

Maybe I have to wait until the D600 will be supported. Question is, how do I test ASP again because by then the test period might be expired ...

In the "good" old ASP Times it was possible to get a trial extension if you wrote a mail. If Corel goes the same way?

I think that if the camera name in the exif data is not supported, then your out of luck even if its the identical sensor. A work around is to change the camera name in the exif file. Worth a try and will let you give play with the software.

Thank you all.
Asking for a longer test period is an option - I might come back to that idea.
I was unable to fool the software with another camera name in the NEF's exif data, but nevertheless I have more than 8000 slide scans in the TIFF format to play with.
The "Noise Ninja" is quite impressive. I understand that there is an even more sophisticated version if you pay for it. I already like this one, though.
