Edits lost

I recently reinstalled AS in an effort to fix a problem. Upon opening the new install of AS, I noticed that all of my former preferences were still there, my plugins still there, ratings on photos still intact, but the edits on my photos were gone. I was under the impression that edits were stored in xmp sidecar files along with the raw files. Where did I go wrong, and what must I do to prevent losing my edits in the future, should I need to reinstall AS again?

Did you use catalogs and forgot to set the preferences to write sidecars also for files in catalogs?
