Hello,
I have the following problems with Videostudio 8.
1) After capturing and editing clips if I select "Preview High Quality" the playback is very choppy, if I select "Instant Playback" the playback looks OK. I thoght the reverse of this would have been the case.
2) When I try to create an AVI file using the same settings as the project, at 99% of rendering I get the message "Ulead Videostudio has caused a problem and needs to close,we are sorry for any inconvenience"
Any help would be appreciated.

I've got similar, but slightly more complex, problems. Reading the forum there's some interesting dialogue about CPU usage (as noted by a reply to my own post also) and UVS8.
Many people have your problem and some are running with 1Gb memory, 30Gb+ free space on a spare drive, 256Mb video, fairly powerful CPU's etc. etc. and still having trouble. One poster claimed to have resolved the issue with RAM to 1 Gb, while another claims the setting for previewing clips should be ‘Playback Method to High Quality’ even though it may seem contradictory.
Here's another tip given to me:
Try viewing your freshly captured clips in Media Player, or something similar, prior to editing, to determine if they play ok. If so, go ahead and add transitions, voice or music etc, render and save it, then try the external player again.
I'm getting the impression that UVS8 previews aren't that reliable and you may need to run some tests just to determine if indeed there's really anything wrong with your basic capture, or edited output, or maybe it's just USV8's viewing.
I recommend you read and follow these posts to see if they help you at all.

Try searching for the following in the Video Studio section of the forum:
choppy OR jerky
Ensure you use the OR, or you could use AND to get both words in the search. Hope you find the answer.

Deb,
Thank you for your reply.
I have now enabled the dropped frames counter in VS8 and this shows an excessive number of dropped frames, e.g. on a 30 sec clip (750 frames) 143 frames dropped. I have carried out all recommendations for avoiding dropped frames, enable DMA, disable write behind caching, defrag hard drives, close all background programs etc, but the problem still exists.
I have Videostudio 7 and Pinnacle Studio 9.1 installed and both work with no problems.

Video Issues
Hi David,
I can now configure my PC to drop frames at will, or not in all other programs except USV8. The issue is video related as suggested by Thoff, and previously dismissed by me
.
DXDIAG.exe comes with Direct 9.0c (don't know about other directX versions. DirectX 8 is the minimum for USV8) and enabled me to turn off DirectDraw and Direct3D for my video card. It's an old 16Mb Voodoo Banshee. After disabling these, playback from the camera was smoother in all programs, but USV8 still has dropped frames on capture.
1. Get the latest video drivers for your card and operating system from the manufacturers web site.
2. Have a play with DXDIAG.exe in the 'Display' tab and disable DirectDraw and Direct 3D. This will probably kill any games, but that can be easily remedied as DXDIAG writes to the hardware and doesn't require a reboot to be effective. In other words you can change on the fly (OTF).
3. Check that your machine specs are above Pentium4 2.0 with at least 512Mb RAM and minimum 8 Mb video, as this is what's required for some of USV8's features, according to the manual.
4. Contact USV8 for tech support as they should be aware of the problem. NOTE: If you don't get a reply, try again and use a different email. The bludgers have a known issue with their support emails not reaching some clients and refuse to fix what's broken.
When I finally got a reply from support, they advised me they can't give an answer just yet, but are working on it....... AAARRGGGHHH Lets hope so!
5. Don't worry about lines on the video display in USV8 because they don't normally appear on the captured footage once you view in an external player such as Media Player 9. It's a quirk of USV8 and should be fixed.
6. Use USV7 to capture your footage and THEN edit in USV8 where I think you'll find most things work ok. Also try WinDV the freeby program. If you can't capture in this without issues, then you'll NEVER get USV8 capture working.
7. Check this site for a difinative guide on USV8 settings:
http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/Video%20St ... pid=160378
Phew... that's all I can think of for now.
I'm lucky because I'm looking at a new machine in the next couple of months and if the program doesn't work with Hyper Threading PCI-Express and dual RAM etc, I'll scream. I know that replacing the video card with one that has on board processing and good 3D might resolve some issues, but I'm very annoyed that I fulfilled the minimum specs on the box and it still won't work!

Re: Video Issues
Actually, UVS V8 requires DirectX 9 -- see the System Requirements page. DXDIAG.EXE is part of all versions of DirectX, but most people aren't aware of this utility.debgary465 wrote:DXDIAG.exe comes with Direct 9.0c (don't know about other directX versions.
