Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
So I downloaded and installed the free stuff from the Do More section. My question, it never asked where to put the files (no--not the output, that is in the right place.... the *.exe files.) So let's say I buy X18 in 10 years and wish I had the old gradients from X5..... should I save the gradient folder or find the gradient.exe download?

Either one works, really.
Those downloads should have been downloaded to the Program Data folder.
c:\Program Data\Corel\ etc etc.
Not to be confused with Program Files. (x86 or otherwise) The Program Data folder is a hidden folder where programs can save quick data that they don't want to limit to any one individual user on the computer.

No "ProgramData" folder? Weird. It should be there. It looks exactly the same in Windows 8 as it did in Windows 7.
The files will say "pspgradient" as the extension. You can also locate which folder the gradients are being saved in by looking in the "File Locations" dialog inside of PSP.
It should be Corel_06 that holds the gradients.

Okay, I'll save the end product. To be sure, I just opened control panel, folder options, clicked show hidden folders and apply. Went to OS on C and no ProgramData file (there is the Program files and Program Files (x86) but they show up all the time.) Oh well, will just save all of the end data----just in case!!! Thanks for the info.

On my Windows 7 computer, they are in C:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads and there is a separate folder for each one; all with a jumble of numbers for the folder name.pdxrjt wrote:Levi,

Re: Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
I hear you, but have no clue what I am doing wrong. My machine came with Win7 home Pro, preloaded. There is no folder labeled Program Data on my C drive. I have tried checking both "show hidden folder" and the (paraphrased) "show hidden system folder" but nothing like Program Data shows up on C. I have Programs Files and Program Files (x86)....but no program data. I can't remember ever deleting anything like that so I'm not sure where to look or how to find the mysterious (on my computer) Program Data.... folder.

Re: Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
Okay, did some research. Found that the problem of a disappearing "Program Data" folder has occurred at various times and in various Windows operating systems. Only one of the references I looked at suggested a virus, but in that case numerous virus scans came out clean. I may be naive (and truly I realize you can get nasties from anywhere) but I don't go to porn or gambling sites, don't download warez and have only downloaded 4-5 free effects (all of which were scanned by AVG.) I run malware, adware or virus programs at least once a week and update my programs regularly. It could be a very sneaky nasty, but I kind of doubt it (but would be interested if someone had ideas to the contrary.) In the 3-4 other sites I read, there was no "solution" which worked. The most common recommendation was to hit a restore point before the problem occurred......of course, I don't know when it occurred as I don't recall looking for this folder before. Interestingly, I can examine the contents of this folder by going to c:\ and typing programdata in the search box.....then a whole bunch of files (and I do mean lots) show up and their folder is listed as program data. When I click one on them the file opens, but I haven't found a way of opening the folder itself. As long as the computer is running smoothly I'm not going to go to crazy about this, but it is a puzzle which I will continue to ponder. If anyone has an idea, great.
(Okay, quick addition: A few weeks ago I renewed a program...... AVG or something [from CNET I think,] and the update [without permission from me] did a bunch of goofiness with my search engines. Replaced Google, messed with Firefox, changed my homepage. I did a search and there were a number of complaints about it and how to remedy the situation. I followed the remedies and did a couple of things on my own like system cleaning etc. It resolved the issue. The consensus on the net was that this search engine takeover closely resembled malware. I guess that is the closest thing I can think of to infection in my my computer.)

Re: Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
It's a hidden file, on my computer it is after Program Files (486) and before Users. It is also only one word ProgramData, not two words. I have AVG and it didn't do any of that to my computer.pdxrjt wrote:I hear you, but have no clue what I am doing wrong. My machine came with Win7 home Pro, preloaded. Re: Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
Computerdata doesn't show up when I "unhide" files or even unhide system files with folder options in control panel. I don't think it was AVG per se.... if I remember correctly it was a CNET download and installed a search engine called Blecco or Blecko or something like that. It "chose" (without help from me) to make Blecco the default search engine, changed the Firefox add tab page, gave me an unwanted tool bar and modified my home page. When I searched the net for info on how to de-install this, the majority of people noted it was very malware like behavior and blamed it on CNET....apparently a number of people downloaded programs from CNET and got this behavior. Was it CNET? I don't know, but that's what I read. I am not sure where I downloaded my copy of AVG....if it was from CNET, then that was it. I don't have too much extra security running. Just a program for anti-virus and one for anti-spyware/malware.

Re: Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
If you downloaded all the free stuff and it is installed in your X5 folder, then you can search for the downloads. They are Brush.exe, PresetShapes.exe, Maps.exe, LayerEditing.exe, Gradient.exe, Corel_KPT.exe, PictureTube.exe, PictureFrame.exe, PSPX5_SP1.exe, MiscMasks.exe, MiscTextures.exe, MiscPatterns.exe and MiscStyledLines.exe. They are inside here: C:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads. You can try to unhide protected operating system files and see if that helps but they are still hidden on my computer and this folder is visible although it is dimmed.
Re: Where are downloads (from "Do More"--downloaded?
On an XP Machine, the downloads (installers) from "Do More" are saved to and run from:
%allusersprofile%\Application Data\Corel\Downloads\
(which equates to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Corel\Downloads\).
Whereas installations on a later OS download to and run from:
C:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads\... (or equivalent).
Like addons to previous versions, it looks like these installers are keyed to install specifically for the version. (They read the registry to determine the installation location of the main program.)
e.g. The KPT pack for PSP X4 (PSPX4_KPT.exe) was designed to install for its folder structure. The KPT pack for PSP X5 (Corel_KPT.exe) is designed to install for its folder structure.
I don't think there is really a reason why the resultant files can't be copied to a new folder structure (I have legacy gradients, picture frames, brushes, etc. all the way back from Jasc PSP 8 copied to the latest version, where there are not conflicts or duplicates...), but some of the plugins may not be perfectly compatible with later versions.
