After upgrading from W7 to W8 only VS X5 plays .avi videos with a jitter, other software doesn't (Powerdirector, Windows Media Players etc).
Any ideas as to why?

What flavour of .avi are you talking about? I ask because there are over 800 different formats which use the .avi extension. Apart from uncompressed "true" avi, it is merely a wrapper extension. Even mpeg-4 formats like DivX and Xvid call themselves .avi... So if you can, right click on the files in the VS timeline or library window and copy all the Properties here please...

I cannot copy paste but it says:-
Microsoft Avi files - Open DML
25.000 FPS
3703.13 kbps
Compression - DV Video Encoder Type 2
24 bits 720 X 576, 4:3
It's the pre HD stuff shot out of a Sony @ 2007 era

DV/AVI is normally one of the most stable formats around. But it could be a conflict in VS over the introduction by Microsoft relatively recently of a new Firewire IEEE1394 driver. Usually, reinstalling a legacy firewire driver rectifies this problem. I am not sure about Win 8, though you might want to try this.
1- Open Device Manager (which I imagine is still there somewhere in Win
2- Expand the "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" node in the device tree by double clicking.
3- Select the Driver tab and the click the Update driver button.
4- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
5- Select "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer ..." and Check the box before “Show compatible hardware”.
6. Choose the second option--- "1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy)", and click next to update the driver.

No firewire on this PC, no IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers to be seen.
But only VS has the problem, PowerDirector, media player and VLC media all play fine.
