No Signal problems

Post by tallicdeth »

Ok, using ulead vs 6 and 9 demo now...which I must say is a kick *** program!

Capturing is perfectly freakin peachy, editing goes great, (love the digital pan/zoom feature, reverse clips and the ease of the playback speed button)
As Don Vito would say, Best Video Editor Ever!

Anyways, when I get to recording back to the camera, thats where the problem comes in. I capture in DV Type 1, and should I be exporting as the "Project Settings" option, DV (4:3), or does it make a lick of difference?

In VS 6, I have the same problem, where in exporting to the camera, it cuts out and has bits of no signal, but the video is fine on the computer upon playback....makes me seriously think I should upgrade this POS

Just trying to think of ideas before replacing the computer or the camcorder.

UVS handles both DV Type 1 and DV Type 2 -- some other NLEs have a definite preference for one or the other, but if you stick with UVS, it doesn't matter.

The only difference between Type 1 and Type 2 is how the audio is included in the file. Type 1 uses a single stream containing both audio and video, while Type 2 uses two separate streams. This makes Type 2 DV AVI files a bit easier to edit, but it also takes more processing power. Type 1 would therefore be a better choice for an older computer if the NLE can handle this format.

Before you try to output your project back to the camcorder, you should render it back to a DV AVI file if you haven't done so yet. This avoids having to transcode on the fly, which if it can't be done in realtime will cause problems. Type 1 may again be your best bet.

In addition to what Torsten has said, you need to ensure that, during the export process, all background processes in your computer are turned off: screen-saver, perhaps anti-virus and perhaps the more 'intrusive' firewalls (in which I include Zone Alarm); plus any other potentially intrusive programs that appear in your system tray. I have quite a powerful computer, but I have found it necessary even to disconnect my phone from the computer as I have had a phone call briefly interrupt a DV-export-to-vidcam process. The less powerful your computer might be, then the more necessary it becomes to disable these background operations.

A video editing system should not have any other processes running while rendering. That goes especially for virus scanners, firewalls, diallers etc. If you need to use the machine for other tasks as well, set up a dual boot. You will be so much happier.
