Fade in / out overlay track

Post by richard_hawkes »

Hi guys,

I'm just about ready to buy Corel Studio Pro X5, but one "issue" is bothering me, I cannot fade in and out the overlay track. I can drag the cross-fade onto the image or video, but it doesn't cross-fade with the actual video. Instead, the screen suddenly goes black and the overlay track fades in. Same on the way out, it just fades to black (queue the music  ) and then the underlying video pops back in. Most unpleasent!

I thought maybe it was a pre-rendering issue, but post-render, this effect is still there. If there is a fix for this, my wallet will be open!!

FYI I'm using the 30-day trial Video Studio Pro X5.

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard
I use VS X4 and I just checked and it worked ok for me.
What I did was add 2 video clips to an overlay track with NO gaps between them. I then then placed a cross fade attribute between the 2 clips.
Not sure if there is a glitch with X5 but I have noticed with X4 that I sometimes experience the problem you reported BUT only when previewing the video by dragging the 'slider' along, when I actually play the video it works ok.

If you are experiencing the problem in a large project try creating a test project of just 2 video clips both on the overlay track with a cross fade between then and see if the problem is still there.

Maybe someone with more experience may have a suggestion (maybe a setting).

Thanks for that, but that's not quite the issue I have.

I am placing a video on the "main" video track and a picture on the overlay track. I'm adding fade in/out effects either side of the image, but rather than just the image fading in and out, the whole screen does instead. Here is the effect example I created:

And here is my VideoStudio Pro X5 screen:
This is the IDE setup that shows the issue.

Hope that makes it clear!

I'm not sure but I don't think that will work.
I think that you can only add a transition BETWEEN two adjacent clips.

In your case you would need to double click on the video clip on the overlay track and then select FADE IN MOTION EFFECT and also FADE OUT MOTION EFFECT under the ATTRIBUTES tab. That will work.

Thanks again... But... Fade In/Fade Out are not available for an image, only videos.

Shame.

Using X4 I just create a test project with an image on the video track and another image on the overlay track. I was able to apply FADe IN and FADE OUT on the image.

Try this:

Put the image on the overlay track

Double click it

Under Attributes, hover your mouse over the ascending or descending bars and by selecting these, fade will work

You might have to split the photo or clip according so that you get timing right

Hi Guys

Option one for a fade,……
As mentioned by Phil, do not use the fade transitions. Use the Direction and Styles—Fade In –Fade Out ramps to set a fade.
The duration of the fade can be set by adjusting the Blue bar immediately below the preview screen, float the mouse over the trim bars for a tool tip.

Option two
Transitions……..
Using A/B transition on a single overlay clip will produce a black section as your YouTube sample.

First place a Colour Clip from the library adjacent to your clip, apply any A/B transition.
The colour section will show when played.
Make the Colour clip transparent using the Chroma Key,
Double click colour clip to select clip and open attributes tab.
Click Mask & Chrome Key—panel may be open?
Set transparency to 99%, box immediately above the word Apply

Transition should play without the annoying black section.

Thanks Trevor

That is exactly what I was trying to explain 2 replies ago (referiing to your first method).

Hi Guys

Thanks John
With earlier versions it was not possible to use transitions in the overlay tracks, only the Directions and Styles were available.

Many users had complained to Corel and eventually they changed the software to allow transitions, however there are a few hick-ups which we seem to have overcome. But then again nothing is perfect.

Another Option
The FX filter Picture In Picture is quite powerful, once you get used to using it, a bit of a learning curve.
That will produce a multitude of effects including a simple fade In – Out.
