Input Sound Level Control

Post by brywkeo »

I'm attempting to capture a VHS tape into Video Studio 9.
All goes well except the sound coming in is so high it's distorted.
I cannot seem to find the control that allows me to regulate the input sound level.
What am I missing?

Granted it's not an inherent distortion on tapes ...

Check your soundcard's Recording Line-In settings; you can reduce the 1st stage input line levels there.

I know UVS has got it's own input level controls too, but in my case I left those at defaults. Approach it from your soundcard first.

SUGGESTION: If you're going to do this (video transfers, that is) very often. Go out and get yourself a little mixer that sits between your video source and the computer. Then you can trim or increase the levels, equalize the highs and lows; and get optimum audio most of the time.

Mell,
Yes the VHS sound quality is good.
I have already adjusted my sound card's level controls but it has not helped.
Where is the UVS level controls?

I use 'Leadtek WinFast TV-USB II Deluxe' to capture the video. Do I connect the mixer between this device and my computer or do I place it between my VCR and the device?

Thanks

In capture, capture video, options, capture options, check display source video, then you can adjust your video level

Thanks Bob,
I had tried this before but the volume knob won't budge.
It's all the way to the top and it won't let me adjust it.
Because of this I had thought maybe there was another place I could adjust the volume.
What do I do now?

Hi brwykeo,

In your case, the mixer should sit between the video/audio source (your VCR) and the capture hardware.

VCR --> Mixer thru Single Stereo Line In <or> 2 Mono Line-Input --> WinFast TV-USB II Deluxe

And since you capture audio thru the WinFast setup, then the suggestion on soundcard input level is invalid. Check if your capture device comes with its own software-based audio input level control.

If nothing makes sense, conduct this test: Just record from a pure audio source like CD or FM radio thru your WinFast TV-USB II Deluxe into UVS's Audio Track and play it back. See if it's distorted.

Based on your setup, I would focused on looking for some form of level control from the WinFast TV-USB II Deluxe angle.

The other thing I would make sure (though it's most unlikely) is that you have connected the audio feed into the Mic instead of the Line input. Then the source levels will definitely clip and the sound distorted.

Would you happen to have the audio cables plugged into a MIC jack input
instead of the normal "Line-In" jacks.

You don't want to use the MIC input jacks if that is the case.
Use the normal Line-Input's on the adapter or the soundcard.

The software to capture with my Winfast TV-USB II Deluxe is 'Winfast PVR'. I did as you suggested and although the volume slider control remains at the top on UVS the meter shows that it's recording at a far lower level and the volume sounds great on playback.

WinFast PVR is an awesome capture package and what I've tried to do in the past is capture the VHS thru WinFast and then edit and burn it from UVS. However every time I do that the sound and video are out of sync by about 14 seconds.

I think maybe the capture settings (in WinFast) and the burn settings (in UVS) may not have been in sync.

Well Mell and Bob thanks a whole bunch. I really do appreciate it. I have the rest of this day to capture and burn a couple of more videos and see if everything works out well and then that's it. Tomorrow I'm offf tenting with my wife Carol along the West Coast (Canada) for a whole month.

If anything should not go well today I will post again.

Thanks again guys.

Cool,

At the end of the month long vacation, there'll be even more video footages to contend with ... :)

If recording thru the capture device yields consistently good results, then stick to it.

The audio/video out-of-sync problem may be a result of various problems; ranging from hardware latency, PC performance, software driver issues.

Possible solution may be to capture video and audio as separate files (most capture device has that option) and sync it properly yourself by adjusting the video and audio track position prior to rendering.

Hope it helps.

Is there any reason why this is greyed out and not checkable in my case? Doesn't matter if I choose AVI for a capture mode or MPEG/DVD.

Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for missing this. Seems that it would be greyed out since I'm capturing sound using the line in to Audio card between the capture card? Would that be accurate?

If this is the case, does anyone out there know if the ATI MMC has a way of setting/changing this input volume? I believe I'm using version 9.3 but not sure.

Thanks
