Royalty/Copyright issues

Post by surfgranny »

I've been using Ulead for the past few years to make videos for family members and have been told my work looks professional. At their urging, I have entered one of my videos in a filmmaker's contest. My question is, if I have used audio or other Ulead goodies in the video, am I violating copyright and/or royalty policies? The winning films may be broadcast so I'd really like to know before I end up in a lot of trouble. It's not too late for me to withdraw my video if need be.

If you have used anything in your videos, not of your own making, like CD music or recorded music from any broadcast, content that is copyrighted, though easily available on the internet, like images, clips, mp3 music etc. you can potentially get yourself into serious trouble.

You could try to get the original authors consent to use their work but I would not hold my breath.

Please read this page and its foot note:

http://www.ulead.com/download/freedownload.htm.

It's better to check with Ulead customer service too.

Yes, I know better than to use other people's stuff - I'm talking about the audio tracks, images, titles, flash animation and video clips, etc that Ulead includes in the 9.0 software.

Read your user agreement.

"You may not
(1)make use or have made any form or copy, whether digital printed or photographic or otherwise of the software except insofar as such software may be incorporated by you into on-screen or printed materials."

In other words, you are allowed to use Ulead components as long as you are using them in an onscreen or printed project.

(Hey, it also says it's illegal to use the program to make porn.)

Pick-up the phone & call ulead to confirm.
Then after you have finished the DVD have
someone from Ulead executive staff review
and approve it in writing.
I believe their program content are OK to use.

It's mainly HOW you use the software.
You cannot use the software to perform an illegal act.
Example: Illegal porn, other artists work etc.

If you are entering a serious contest also have a lawyer
review the dvd. That also includes the packaging you use
to distribute it. If you win the contest someone else can
use your material and alter it in a way you don't approve of.
You probably have to add credits to the dvd to be legal.
