Since WinDVD Pro 11 is not compatible with Windows 8

Post by trog »

Hello,

I ran the Windows 8 upgrade assistant to see what were the applications compatible (tool is here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... -windows-8) and found out that WinDVD Pro 11 is not compatible.

What solution has Corel to offer to its customers?

Regards,

Trog

That is really a question you should be asking Corel via their customer support contact point on the Corel website - as you can see from the header of these forums this is a "User to User" web board - we are all just users like you and have no knowledge of Corels plans for the future.

I'm sorry about this.. the best work around that you can do is to run the program in compatibility mode - this site will give you the steps on how to run WinDVD 11 on Compatibility mode, though there's no assurance the it will work 100%.

The response of Corel Customer Support does not help much:
Kindly be informed that there is no information for disclosure regarding the release of a patch for WinDVD Pro 11 that will make the program compatible with Windows 8 operating system. We suggest to visit our Support pages in our website regularly for any updates.
Thanks Abeil I will give a try.

FYI, Sony is replacing WinDVD (BD) with PowerDVD (BD) in their Windows 8 upgrade offer but my VAIO laptop is too old to benefit from it (less than 2 years!).

I'm wondering whether if you install WinDVD pro 11 onto a Win 8 machine whether the Blu-ray codecs will be recognised by Windows Media Centre to facilitate Blu-ray playback via that programme rather than WinDVD, it would be a temporary workaround until Corel either releases an update for ver 11 or releases Win 12 which should be Win 8 compatible.

A very interesting occurrence, I've managed to get WinDVD pro 11 working on my Win 8 laptop without resorting to the compatibility mode. While trying to open the programme from the metro interface just gave me a black screen opening it via the icon within the program folder worked, I then tried again with the shortcut on the Metro desktop & that began to work also, I tried playing a video file & it worked fine.
I don't know whether this is a fluke or whether opening the program from within the program's folder made a difference even though in effect it shouldn't be any different.

Further to my above post it seems I can easily play DVDs & video files (.mpeg, .mpg etc.) but blu-rays just freeze the program.

Hi all,

I'm new to Corel, Is it me or is Corel the most shoddiest company when it comes to support...

Does anyone know when WinDVD Pro 11 will be compatible with Windows 8?

I feel absolutely cheated by Corel. They should be patching their products or clearly mark the software as not compatible. Or at least have the compatibility list linked on every product page so customers can view whether or not their purchase will be compatible or not.

Anyways,

Thanks for the info mtblackhawk.

That explains why Corel's not doing anything about WinDVD Pro 2011. Fixing it is no longer thier problem so they gave it to sMedio.

Sigh, I'm going to have to look for an alternative bluray player now.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I wished Corel mention in on the WinDVD Pro 2011 store page....

Sigh, well I waited long enough. I've been trying to upgrade my pc to Windows 8 and the only application that wasn't compatible was WinDVD Pro 11.
It's very unfortunate that I couldn't find ANY reviews regarding sMedio's version of WinDVD Pro 11 for Windows 8.

sMedio appears to be a new company and I just don't like the feeling of trusing a new company to be around for too long. They have no history at the moment that would make me trust them. I waited quite a bit for ANY review about sMedio's WinDVD Pro 11 for Windows 8.

I upgraded to Windows 8. It was silly to wait anyways. There also hasn't been any word on a Corel/sMedio WinDVD Pro 12 appearing anytime soon. So, I've personally dropped WinDVD Pro 11 for another competing bluray application that recently released a new version of their software plus a seasonal discount.

Sorry, WinDVD Pro 11. I enjoyed using WinDVD to view my movies. In fact WinDVD had played a couple of blurays that my new one can't...

If Corel puts out another worth while release for a WinDVD 12 I'll return.(...probably, the new application I'm using it bloated beyond belief...)

I thought maybe you consider changing another player compatible with Win 8 as so many excellent Blu-ray software currently.

Corel WinDVD Pro is now compatible with Windows 8.

http://www.corel.com/corel/product/inde ... rod4090069

I reinstalled WinDVD pro 11 and now it magically works on windows 8! I didn't have to tinker with any settings what so ever. I did have to download a Corel Kaypack or something prior to use but it works!!!
If only they updated sooner I would have cared.
