VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
This is an intermitent problem, but it is very annoying. I have had VSX5 shutdown completely without any error messages while in Share>Create Disc>DVD. I have no problems in the Add Media step. I add a Video File, MPEG2, in Add Media and change the Thumbnail to have the title of the clip. I click Next to go to Menu & Preview. I select a main menu from the gallery, select Hide Object for one of the provided texts in the main menu, and edit the PRJxxxx one. I select the Edit tab. Select Customize>Motion Filter and Zoom In and Out options. When I click OK to leave the Customize Menu, VSX5 completely shuts down without any error messages. This doesn't occur every time. I have also clicked OK, returned to the Menu & Preview window, and then clicked Preview. After clicking Preview, VSX5 has shutdown. I have also had the problem after selecting Navigation buttons in Menu & Preview and clicking OK. I have opened an incident with Corel support, and they asked if I had Service Pack 1 installed and if my software and drivers are up to date. I have Service Pack 1 installed and everything is up to date. I'm waiting for their next reply. I have rebooted after I experienced the problem 3-4 times, and I'm able to create 5-6 DVDs before it reoccurs. Has anyone else experienced these problems? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Last weekend I reviewed the User Guide section titled "Creating Disc Menus" again and found something that I might have done incorrectly. On page 153 of the PDF of the User Guide there are instructions "To create a menu template". The first step is to click on Customize in the Edit tab of Menu & Preview, and step 4 is to click Add to Menu Template. When clicking Customize, I had no intention to create a menu template, so after making my modifications I would click OK. On page 150 of the User Guide they show how to use Moving Path and Menu In/Out for the menu. Maybe I should only use Customize when I want to create a menu template, and there may be a program bug that causes VSX5 to shutdown when I click OK and don't add a menu template. It seems far-fetched to me, but I asked Corel about it on Monday and haven't heard back from them. I'll update if I hear back from Corel support.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
You can make a number of changes - such as background image - music - setting menu in/out requirement etc. without using the 'Customise' option.
Even if you do use the customise option to change thumbnail frames - thumbnail numbers or navigation buttons you do not necessarily have to save it as a template, it is optional. you should be able to do as you did and after making any changes just click OK and use the modified template.
reading through your posts I cannot see anything wrong with what you are doing so can't really explain your random shutdowns.

hello GaryG45,
Have you tried updating your DirectX? It's reinstalled on your Windows OS but the one installed is not the latest version. You can download the Direct X for your OS here -- http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/window ... tx-11.aspx .

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Hi,
According to dxdiag, the Direct X Diagnostic Tool, I'm currently using Direct X 11, and the display features are enabled. From what I've been able to find Direct X 11 is the current version. Are you suggesting that I reinstall Direct X 11?
I have found some dump files in C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/CrashDumps with file names vstudio.exe.23256.dmp taken on the days when I had the problems. I'm going to ask Corel support if they are interested in them or if they would be interested in the next one that occurs.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Hi Gary
What I say is the manual update of DirectX has been known to cure some strange issues with video studio that the auto updates do not, these findings go back to VS 10 from experience.
I reinstalled the operating system to Vista, auto updated windows including DirectX, I had some small issues in running the program, these were fixed after the manual install.
I do not know why the manual approach improves things, I cannot be sure that it will make any difference to Windows 7, nor that it will fix your problem, neither does the manual update change the version number.
I generally advise the download from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=8109 Yes the date shows as old but is compatible with Windows 7
I am not sure that the web install can be classed as a manual install as the system is scanned and you are told that you are using the latest version.
We can only advise on past experience and replies from other members, the decision to install DirectX is of course yours.

Yes, the version number remains the same -- DirectX 11 for Windows 7. But it is the *build* of that version which is updated. Similar to you using VS. The current version is X5, but with an update patch it remains X5 but with a different build number.

Based on your advice, I reinstalled Direct X 11, using the link Trevor supplied. We'll see how it goes.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
It is a bit of a strange affair when we install an apparently old update, the version number does not change, yet the update does fix some things for some users.
The update must have been tweaked at some time by Microsoft as it now supports Windows 7.
I am not surprised that people are a little apprehensive in updating, especially when we say it may not fix your problem?

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
I'm pretty certain I've found the cause of the problem. I've sent the following to Corel support.
Below is a description of what is done in the Menu & Preview step of Share>Create Disc>DVD.
In the Gallery tab I select the last Smart Scene Menu that looks like a piece of film.
I go to the Edit tab.
I select Delete the Music Track for this Menu and uncheck Motion Menu.
In the Preview window there are two text boxes. I change the text in the PRJ_xxxx text box and then change the font color to white.
I change the text in the second text box, which has the thumbnail name, and then change the font color to white.
I click Customize.
In the Customize Menu, for the Navigation button style I select the fourth option from the left.
When I do this, red boxes appear around the leftmost navigation button and a text box with the text "Enter text here".
I click OK and VSX5 shutsdown without any messages.
If I move the leftmost navigation button, the red boxes disappear. When I click OK, it goes back to the Menu & Preview window, and I can click Next to go to the Output step.
I tried this with other menu samples, and I don't get the red boxes when I select the navigation buttons. The film strip menu is the only one to cause the overlay with a single clip DVD.
I selected another sample menu and went to the Customize Menu. I moved a navigation button over a text box on that menu, and red boxes appeared around the navigation button and the text box. I also received a window with the message "Some Menu objects are overlapped. Continue?" I have options Yes and No, and I select Yes. After selecting Yes I click OK and have no problems going back to the Menu & Preview window. When I use the film strip menu and get the red boxes after selecting the Navigation buttons, I believe I should receive the message about menu objects overlapping. Because I don't get this message something is causing VSX5 to shutdown when I click OK. At least I know what to look for and how to correct it. Hopefully this is something that will be fixed in X6.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Hi
Thanks Gary for the detailed information.
There was a problem with menus associated with Motion Menu and Background Audio. I think X4 == This caused an error but not a crash, as far as I know fixed by Corel.
I will give your process a run to see if I can replicate the problem
It may be as simple as a corrupt UFO file, that’s the type of file used for the menu.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Hi
I have done a few tests
That template is the only one that has the title links/hotspots immediately above the navigation controls.
Then when you select another cluster they show slightly larger and overlap giving the error “some menu objects are overlapped” Clearly seen by the red warning boxes.
I do not know why the new buttons should be larger than the original, I guess that’s the issue Corel should fix.
The easiest option however would be to remove the template, not the nicest thing to do?
I do not get a close down of the program just the info window asking if I wish to continue.
Thanks again Gary, at least we are aware of the situation.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Trevor,
Because you receive the menu objects overlapping message and I don't I no longer feel it is a bug with VSX5, but it may be due to something that occurred when I installed VSX5 or something else on my laptop. I've updated Corel support with your findings and have asked for suggestions.
I installed VSX5 for a trial on 6/12/2012 and the version I have is 15.1.0.34, which I believe is Service Pack 1. Prior to doing the trial of VSX5 I had performed a trial of Womble's MPEG Video Wizard DVD 5.0. It was still installed when I installed VSX5, and I didn't uninstall it until July or Aug when I decided to use VSX5. Have you heard of any problems when the Womble product is installed prior to VSX5?

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Hi Gary
The problem when customising that particular template is certainly a Corel Video Studio issue. The red boxes indicate the overlayed links.
The new navigation buttons are too large, they are in fact larger than the original templates buttons which is causing the problems.
Only this template suffers mainly because of the layout, a little cramped below the screen.
I think your pc crashed is another matter, I do not know of any issues with Womble.
Gary Is it only when you customise the template that VS crashes, or do you have problems at other times?
By the way i have checked X4 which uses the same menu template and shows the same errors.

Re: VSX5 intermitent shutdown during Menu & Preview
Trevor,
Currently the only time VSX5 crashes is when I try to add the navigation buttons to this menu template. No other problems with it at this time.
I did have two other problems after I encountered this problem. One occurred during the DVD burn process where the Elapsed Time stopped updating. I had to use Task Manager to get VSX5 stopped, but I recreated the video file for the DVD and had reoccurrences. The second problem occurred during video file creation for one video. VSX5 would produce an unspecified error message and crash. After I reinstalled Direct X 11 it never reoccurred. So currently this is my only problem.
