Real Video File format - very poor quality

Ok so I'd like to post some video to my website. In the past I've used frontpage and .AVI files that have to completely load before they play - which can take some time.

I am now trying to use smaller sizes but the video content looses so much resolution - it's almost no fun to watch.

Any hints as to good video that can be posted on a web site?
