Is PSP X3 multi core capable?

Post by Jan Shim »

Hi,

I've been running X3 on a Core2Duo Dell Studio 17 laptop running Win 7 32-bits for a very long time. Editing Canon 5D Mark II large JPEG files is a test of patience. I'm presently looking for a desktop for my demanding work and I was wondering if someone can shed some light on the X3 being multi core capable or not.

The system specs I'm considering may or may not be this exact one but it would be very close or better http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/mod ... .SJPAA.005

I run some Nik Software's Colour Efex Pro and Viveza and apply these filters on just ONE 21-megapixel JPEG can sometimes 30 seconds. Working with hundreds of files that take this long is ludicrous. I am looking for a 2-3 second max. Your input is much appreciated.

Will it run on a multi core system? You bet.\
Will it perform better? Marginally. I believe X3 was the first to have certain tools try to make use of multi cores.
Will just about anything you throw at it run better/faster than your 32 bit system? As long as it runs on a 64 bit system also, you bet. PSP and Nik Color Effects (for PSP X4 Ultimage) runs just fine on a 64 bit system.

Other things may not run just fine on a 64 bit system. Most of it is a work in progress. If you have a camera that can shoot raw format (.cr2 for example with a Canon) the latest camera's raw files aren't yet supported by the Windows Picture Viewer. What that means is you look at a folder of raw files and instead of thumbnails looking like tiny pics of the actual scene they are all the exact same generic thumbnail saying "this is an image file". Microsoft has stepped up and started making codec packs when the camera manufacturers have been dragging their feet though, it just takes time to catch up.
Some hardware doesn't run properly or at all on a 64 bit system. Then again, you may have all of your ducks in a row and everything works just fine.

I am trying to find out if X3 is better off with lots of raw clock speed on top of fast component such as SSD. I'm also considering custom building a Win 7 64-bit PC exclusively for PSP, Canon software and Lightroom and I think this route makes a lot more sense than the Acer Predator.

Depending on what system you're coming from you will see an improvement. I came from a single core 32 bit computer with a mobo that maxes out at 2gb of ram to a 64 bit dual core mobo with 8gb of ram. It's an improvement, but partially in the fact that I can now do more in other programs while I have PSP X3 open.
