X4: brighten along a gradient?

Post by gning »

Is there any way to apply brightening along a gradient? Like to compensate for lighting that comes onto a surface from one side, in order to make the surface look more uniformly lit?

Yes.

Any number of ways. My favorite is to use one of the adjustment layers (not brightness & contrast if I can avoid it) and then simply apply a black and white gradient using the Fill tool.

Another way would be to create a light-mask. You create a mask from from the image using the image's "luminance" or brightness values. This will select all of the brightest areas of the image. Then you can invert the mask to select all of the darkest areas and apply the adjustments to a copy of the image. Or create a selection from the mask and create an adjustment layer which will then automatically add the selection to its own mask.

So lots of fun options.
