X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
Hello,
VS X5 Pro
I've got an mpeg2 video that has variable bit rate max 5000 and audio 192. After I do a share - save as first clip the new video has 8000 bit rate and 256 audio, the screen resolution is different and my file is twice the size as the original. It doesn't seem it's doing a save as first clip but using the std dvd/mpeg2 format.
My VS10 saves it exactly as the first clip.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
Hi VS95
First of all Save As First Video Clip does not work with all types of file, in many cases the option will not be available.
I can only assume that Video Studio is not reading the video file correctly.
Is it a compliant DVD Mpeg2 file.?
Right click the clip and select properties, what are they?
You can if you wish save the window as an image and attach to your post.
When you choose "Same as first clip" the save windows shows the conversion settings within the Properties window, these will be the properties of the rendered video file.
Compliant Video File
Go to F6 Preferences-Tick Show Messages when Inserting first video..........
Start a new project
Add your original video file, you should receive a request to match the project properties.
Choose Details and view the properties in the right panel, these should be your video files properties.
Choosing Yes will change the project properties to match.
Now you should be able to use Same As Project properties
If the above does not work then the video is not using compliant properties?
It does however seem strange that VS10 works ok?

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
Thanks for the help.
Here's the actual file properties: When I say to create the project properties to the first video file, it goes to the mpg2 default:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 8000 kbps
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
In VS10, properties show identical to image above. When I set the project properties to the first file in VS10, it sets them fine.
Thanks

Hi
Your video file although a Mpeg2 type is not DVD Compliant when using a frame size of 576 x 328.
I would not have thought that the option "Same as First Clip" would be available to you.
Nor will you be able to set the project properties to those settings.
I can only assume that Video Studio is confused with the video clips properties. it is clearly a mpeg2.
Neither can understand why VS 10 reads this file correctly, at least thats what you are saying.
I am unable to set VS 10 to those properties using 576 x 328. frame size
When you complete the rendering using VS 10 can you confirm that the properties of the new file identical to the original.?
Where did you get this video from?
What are you trying to create from this video. If a DVD then it will use 720 x 480 assuming you are using NTSC?

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
The rendered video properties from VS 10 are identical to the original.
The video is from a Streaming Video Recorder. I can't control the size. I'm not making a dvd out of it but a file I need to distribute to other members of the group. I've been playing with different VS settings looking at the VS10 and X5 but nothing has seemed to make a difference.

If you are creating a video file what difference does it make what the size or resolution is? Why not just distrubute a copy of the original?

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
Good point but that doesn't solve the problem. In addition the look of the video is different, it's a couple hundred megabytes larger and that's not what they want.canuck wrote:If you are creating a video file what difference does it make what the size or resolution is? Again, VS10 works fine so you'd think a much later version would work better.

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
Could you post a clip of the original video to a free website such a "up4down.com" or "4shared.com"? We could then play around with it.
Of course the video file size will be larger if you go to standard mpeg from one with lower bitrate and lower resolution.
What exactly do "they" want? Again, why can't you just give them a copy of the original or are you doing some edits? After al the original will be the best quality you will ever get no matter what format you use.

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
Hi
I am still confused as to why VS 10 actually works ok with this video.
Don't get me wrong I do believe you, but would not expect this.
I am unable to use VS10 to create a video using your properties.
So I would be interested it seeing this video.
Earlier I mentioned a method of changing the Project Properties to match the video file.
You seem to be able to do this, can you confirm---can you e-mail the project file (VSP)?
If you need to distribute the video Uploading to "up4down.com" or "4shared.com" would be the easiest way, unless they require it on a disc which you say not.
I doubt if we will get Video Studio X5 to create a video to these properties
If this is what you require then you have no option than to use VS10.

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
I can't distribute the original because it needs to be edited. I'll put together a small test file I can upload that will recreate the problem. I'll use VS10 to trim it showing it works there.

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
I've attached a very short test file along with vsp project files both in VS10 & X5 that recreate the problem. The project files were both set to the video file properties. So we don't get hung up on that other resolution, this file has 640x352 and experiences the same problem. We can see that when setting the VS10 project to the file settings, it retains the file properties while the VSX5 project reverts to the default MPG2 720x480 8000 fixed bitrate etc. Same happens with both when not creating a project file to the file properties then doing a Share - Save As First Clip. File size for the test mpg2 file is 18k. I zipped it so I could attach it here and the zip file is only 10k.
BTW, I have SP1 installed on VSx5.

Hi
Thanks for the sample
No time to explain, using the VS 10 project open VSP using X5.
You may not be able to open in VS 10 again, so make a copy for X5 use
Share Create Video file Same as Project Properties will create a 24 bits, 640 x 352, 29.97 fps

Re: X5 - Share Save as first clip - doesn't
FWIW, when I insert the file you uploaded into X5, it shows the properties you list, including the frame format of 640 x 352. I also got the message to change Project Properties to those of the file, which I accepted. But when I check Project Properties, it shows the standard Project Properties for a DVD and a frame format of 720 x 576. So using "Same as Project Properties' is obviously out. I tried. I also tried 'Same as First Clip', but again the properties reverted to the standard DVD template. I then tried to make a new template using the original properties, and also using the Add method, targeting that file, but got an error message saying that it had an invalid format on which to base a template.
Unfortunately, I don't have VS 10 on any of my computers, so cannot test out that aspect of the problem.

Yes -- that works. But 'Same As First Clip' still reverts to standard DVD format.
