I'm sure there's already an answer to this, but Search gave over 9000 results for "File is already in use", finding each word separately! Even putting the phrase in quotes didn't help.
I have VS12. I downloaded the trial version of X5, mainly to see if it could read my VS12 files. It could. I used X5 to render a VS12 file that had continually crashed when I tried to rendered it with VS12. Not only did it render it successfully, but it did it about twice as fast as VS12 - great. However, that was yesterday. Today I've been trying to reload the original file into X5 again & I just get the message "File xxxx is already in use". Running X5 by double-clicking on the file, running X5 first & clicking the filename from the file menu or clicking Open from the file menu & selecting the file from the list - all give that result. The only way I have loaded the file is to run X5 & drag the file to the timeline. The file has opened, but the project is shown as untitled, even though there is a title. Also the project is shown as a single entity on the timeline, not made up of individual frames & captions. Where has my project gone? Is it still in X5? I've tried to open other projects, & they all give the same message! I can't try out my trial version I it won't load my projects!
Help please.
John
PS I've just spent a few minutes holding the mouse pointer over various icons on the X5 screen & clicking a few to see where I got. After that, I had another go at loading the file - & it loaded successfully!! I assume when I loaded X5, it came up in some mode & I managed to get it out of it. Can anyone explain please, because I don't know what I've done!!?

Re: X5 won't let me load file
Sorry - but your going to have to do a bit more explaining.
What file is it from VS12 that you are trying to open in X5 - is it just a Video file ? - in which case what do you mean by "the project is shown as a single entity on the timeline, not made up of individual frames & " - if it is a video file it is only just one entity.
You mention 'file' a number of times - what I'm looking for is some mention of 'project'
I have never tried dragging a 'project' file to the timeline - only videos and images - I'm not sure dragging a project file around works.
Is it a project file (.vsp) you are trying to work with - in which case open it properly from within VideoStudio - that is open VideoStudio and go to "File" then choose "open project" and browse to the .vsp file - select it - click 'open' - does the project load correctly if you do that?
please note that project files opened in X5 will not open in VS12 again - although actual video files should be no problem.
if you have more projects you want to work on in X5 do not try clicking or dragging randomly - use the proper procedure from within X5 of "File >> open project" - assuming you have made projects. - if they are just videos then right click over the timeline and choose 'insert video' and browse to the video select it click open and your video should be in the timeline.

Re: X5 won't let me load file
Hi John
A X5 Video Studio Project file can only be opened by X5, unless you save the project file to be backward compatible.
However, Video Studio can only save the file to be backward compatible for two versions, that is X3.
Open the project in X5
Go to "file -- save as"
In the Save as Type box choose X3
Now open in X3 and repeat above for X2 (VS12)
Ok so you only own X2. (VS12)
Send the project file to me via e-mail, view my Quick Guide for e-mail address.
If you wish to run tests using the trial versions, copy the project files using Windows Explorer, the copy to be used in X5. The originals to be used for X2

Re: X5 won't let me load file
Thank you for the responses.
The File is indeed a project - Patagonia Video.VSP which consists at this stage of stills & movies with transitions & captions. The original VS12 X2 version I successfully loaded directly into my X5 trial version. It played, & I was also able to render it to an mpeg file - Patagonia video.mpg. It was only later that I had this problem loading any project. Since my 1st post, I have had no trouble loading VS12 X2 projects into X5. I've no idea why I had problems before or what I did to make the problem go away. Hopefully it won't happen again.
BrianCee - When I was having the problem, I did drag the VSP project on to the timeline. It did load, but just as a complete, single event, no individual stills or movies showing.
Iata - I have saved the project separately as an X5 VSP file as well so I can still work on the project either in X2 or X5 till I pay for X5 (which will happen shortly I imagine). There seems to be no problem loading X2 version into X5, but I can see it doesn't work the other way round.
Thank you all.

Re: X5 won't let me load file
Hi John
It sounds like you are ok editing in X5.
Nesting Projects.......
Adding a VSP to the timeline will display as a single clip, and will indeed play in full.
This method of editing known as "Nesting" should be used with care, you can have problems with the "nested" project if you further edit the inserted VSP, errors causing Video Studio to close.
I know some use this approach which can be useful, but have to admit in not recommending its use.
