Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
I'm new to Paint shop.
Is it possible to clip an adjustment layer or image to just the layer below it like in Photoshop? Or maybe Paint shop calls it something else?

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
The easiest is to simply group the adjustment layer and the layer below it into a Group Layer.
PSPX4 and PSPX5 - Select both layers by holding the CTRL key and clicking on the layers inside the layer palette. Then you can either click on the "New Group Layer" button at the bottom of the layers palette. Or select "New Group Layer" from the new layer menu.
PSPX3 and older - First select the layer you want the adjustment layer to control. And create a new group layer around that. (Right-click on the layer and select "New Layer Group" from there or from the Layers menu). Then drag the adjustment layer into this group ontop of the layer you want it to effect.
Since Adjustment layers have built in layer masks you can also mask out the adjustment based on the bottom layer's opacity but it if that layer uses blend modes or the like the adjustment will filter the result. So depending on what you want that may not be the best option.

Ah, OK.
BTW: How do you invert the mask or change it back and forth from black to white quickly?

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
OK I need to rephrase the question. The grouping of an adjustment layer works fine.
I need to clip an image layer to an object below it so the image is confined to the shape of that object. Like when you have a wedding album page with rectangles and image layers take on the shape of the rectangles without cropping the images. I Photoshop its called Clipping. Does PSP do anything like that?
(I would post an example but I cannot get this website to work when posting the Img urls)

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
Is this the type of thing you are looking for?:

Method:
1. Load an image at least 2000 pixels wide
2. (T)ext tool, Font - Batavia , Size - 250 Units - Pixels, Stroke Width - 0, Create as - Selection
3. Set Colours Stroke = Black, Fill = Green
4. Type word AUTUMN .
5. Click Apply and the text appears as a selection.
6. Right click inside the text and you can move it around.
7. Go to the Menu bar and choose Selections --> Promote Selection to Layer.
8. You should now have the background layer and a Promoted Selection layer. Turn off the visibility of the Background so you can see the text clearly. Choose Selections --> Select None.
The text is filled in with the image, and that text can be moved around freely with the move tool, copied and used elsewhere.
9. You can place a border stroke around the text by
Select the Background Layer and then Create a new Raster Layer and fill it with the colour you want as the boundary of the text eg Black.
10. Turn off your coloured layer. Select the promoted background layer and choose the Magic Wand tool - Mode Add, Match Mode - All Opaque Feather 0. Select inside the text.
11. Make the coloured layer visible again and Right click and choose Merge Visible.
The selected text is now merged with the coloured layer.
12. Go to Menu bar and Selections --> Modify --> Expand
In the Expand Selection dialog box choose Number of pixels = 6 and click OK.
13. Go to the Menu bar and choose Selections --> Promote Selection to Layer and turn off the visibility of the coloured layer and do Selections --> Select None , to see your result.
The bordered text can now be moved around freely with the move tool, copied and used elsewhere.

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
Thank you for all the info. Yes, it looks like what I'm talking about. I will give that a try.
BTW: What does everyone mean when they say to "Promote" a layer, etc. Its not a Photoshop term so its got me all thrown off.
Working somewhere that uses Corel and I'm having to crash course the software as I work. Thanks for all your help!

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
WOW I need to find some tuts on this before I ask any further. I've been a straight PS guy for years and this software's got me so thrown off base. There's no Edit/Fill command, no Paint bucket tool. Shortcuts are all different.
Guess Ill go back to school and start all over again.
Any links on instructions will be appreciated.
Thanks again.

I found this, Photoshop to Paint Shop Pro Term Dictionary, that lists Paint Bucket as, no real surprise, Flood Fill in PSP.

Thanks Forriner. Problem is, I have looked all over and don't see any Flood Fill tool. Where is it located? Does something have to be enabled to show it?

Wait, I found a Customize box under tools and drag and dropped it into the Toolbar. No wonder I couldn't find it.

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
Flood fill has been on the Tools toolbar since version one. All tools with the little arrow/triangle to the right share the button with other tools hidden under them. Click on the arrow and you'll see the other tools. Flood Fill for example shares a button with Color Changer -at least in PSP 14.

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
I have a Color-Replacer brush tool icon. Is that what you mean? But no Flood Fill Bucket inside.
I'm using X5, perhaps Corel change things in this version.
Edit: I found the Color-Changer tool docked inside the Customize box also. For some reason these two tools were not enabled in the tool bar. Hitting Tool Reset brought everything back as you originally described.

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
Layer from Background in photoshop = Promote Background Layer in Paint Shop Pro. Both can be seen by right clicking a background layer.
In photoshop the Paint Bucket Tool is used to fill with the foreground colour only In paintshop pro the icon on the toolbar that looks like a spilling yellow paint tin is the Flood Fill Tool but in Paintshop pro you can use left or right buttons to flood fill with foreground or background colour - more efficient than Photoshop. It is just below the Eraser icon (like a pencil with eraser ).
The type of icons assumes you are using paintshop pro X4 . (you have not stated in your posts which version you are using and that would make it a bit easier to correctly describe icons.
You will find the conversion to Paintshop Pro easier than a conversion from PSP to Photoshop as PSP is so intuitive and efficient.
One thing I have discovered recently is that if you have a background layer and use an eraser on that PSP converts that to a raster layer so you then get transparency, which is what most people want whereas Photoshop erases to show the background colour and keeps it as a background.
Look on youtube and you will find a lot of videos showing the use of tools and other tutorials.

Re: Clip an image or adjustment layer to another layer
The eraser tool coloring with the background color used to be how PSP functioned. I wonder if that's just gone or if we can get it back. I thought we could if we turned off the auto-action for promoting the background layer but it doesn't look like it. Research time.
I have an old set of video tutorials that I seriously need to consider updating now that I'm able to record at higher qualities.
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL ... e=view_all
I think I managed to get through all of the tools on the toolbar before quitting.
As for clipping, PSP does not have a clipping function like Photoshop does. The best we can do is simulate. With text we can use an open image as a pattern fill or we can do what HartPaul described, of course his method works for more than just text.
We can also create mask layers and group them with the two layers we want to clip to each other to create the same sort of effect. Someone on here created a "clipping Mask" script which simulates the concept but still isn't the same thing.
