and if you have a new camera?
For me if have no plans in the fisrt 2years to buy a new one, but if the camera breaks and i have to buy a new one, what then
darktable/lightroom/..... updates more often. Some people don't have time to wait on that!

Maby they can solve it by support DNG, not only the dng of camera? ;-)

What makes a new camera different? My statement was that in my opinion assumptions what might be the developers maybe implement sometimes in the future shouldn't be a reason to select an application. For example it isn't helpful if new cameras would be supported very fast but the image quality doesn't fit.

I believe you don't know the power of opensource ;-)
someting else, i use a music player from 2004 (amarok 1)
the devs brings in 2008 version 2 out and stops version 1, didn't like that :-o
you know, i"m still using in 2012 version 1, i know now that i can use it with extern "support" until 2017.
why? it's opensource!

bottom line
what you have in software with opensource code you will still have it in future, even if the devs stops other can use it.

What will happen with aftershot if corel shuts it down, or for me the linux versions?
don't understand me wrong, aftershot is still the best at this point.
but if they come out with just updated the soft with new camera, i will look at darktable because i'm 100% sure what i now have it will be in 2020.
and there is a plan to implement more stuff, Communication is HERE the word!

You do still have the option of not buying hardware your workflow can't support. That may cost you more up front (e.g., the price difference between a D800 and a less-expensive D600), but it may cost less than the time and expense of changing to different software and all of the second-order effects that come with it.

And do you know the count of dead open source projects. ;-)

The risk is almost the same independend of open or closed source. Maybe the risk is smaller if the open source developer are paid for there work. If they do it for fun you are dependend on that they have fun and find enougth time. But this becomes offtopic.

In the meantime, another sneaky peek at the monkey reveals that there is yet another build in test: 1.1.0.21
And we wouldn't have to go off topic if Corel gave us some new software to talk about ....
