Creating Preset Shapes in X5

Post by Joelle »

Is it me, or is creating a Preset Shape weird in X5.
Haven't made any for years, then attempted to make one in X5.
It doesn't work (might be a severe senior moment), the is no sub-layer to name.

This is what the Layers Palette looks like when using a shape made in X2:
PresetShape-old-X2.jpg
In X5 it looks like this:
PresetShape-new-X5.jpg
I can't get it to work, so have turned the shape into a Picture Tube.

Aren't you able to rename those New Path sublayers? I just created a custom shape in X5 and it worked just the same as in previous versions. I just clicked on the layer name "New Path" and retyped a new name. You probably need to merge all of those New Paths into just one vector shape and give it a new name before exporting as a custom shape if you want it to be a single shape.

I tried that, as it looked to be the most obvious solution, but it only saved part of the design, not all of it.
I am now doing the same in PSPX, which resides on an old laptop.
You'd have thought someone would, by now, have invented a more user friendly way to do this.
I have a huge folder full of my own Preset Shapes, never a problem in older versions. :-(

Was there a particular reason why you created your sun shape with so many different paths? I just drew a sun like yours and only got one single New Path layer.

You can group all of those New Path layers into one single layer and export the group as your preset shape. Hold down the Ctrl key while you select all of the New Path layers then right-click and choose Group. Give that group a single name and export the group as your Preset Shape. I haven't made enough preset shapes of my own to remember if it works the same in previous versions of PSP or not but it works in X5.

I tried every which-way, grouping, not grouping, making the shape differently (the first version used a previously saved Preset Shape).
I will have anothe stab at this, I feel silly being defeated by something that worked perfectly well before.
Thanks LindaSue :-)

Later edit:
Hah, *now* it works.
I have no idea what I did before that didn't work, other than that it was late at night, but that shouldn't be an excuse!
Thanks for the encouragement LindaSue :-)

I just tried the same thing in X2 and I think it's actually slightly easier in X5 because you can Ctrl click to select all of the New Path layers. That's the only difference between using X2 and X5 to do what you're trying to do. In X2, you click on one of the new path layers and choose Select All. Then right-click on it again and choose Group. You get the same result either way but you save a step in X5.

What exactly is it that you're not able to do in X5? If you're not able to rename those sublayers in your X5 screenshot then something is messed up with your copy of X5. I have no trouble renaming them. If you are able to rename them and group them what happens when you try to export the group as a preset shape? In the screenshot below, I created three new path layers for my sun and I'm able to rename them with no trouble as you can see.

If I want to export all three of those path layers as a single preset shape, I need to group them and give them a new name before exporting them. No different than in X2.

I couldn't rename more than one path, if I then renamed the next one, the previous one would revert to New Path.
Maybe it IS X5 that gave me some grief, I reset the whole thing with the Shift key down, to get rid of that annoying Corel Guide video!
Will check that out.
I edited my post, thanks to your encouragement it now works, so thanks again :-)

Maybe it was a senior moment (have a few of those nowadays .. ;-) )

That's great that it's working now and was just a glitch.

Just thought I'd add that if you don't press the Enter key after typing a new name for a path in X5, it won't "take". That IS different from in X2. In X2, simply clicking off of that layer applies the new name. In X5, it will revert to the previous name unless you press Enter to apply it. Maybe that was your problem all along and maybe that's a bug.

It's the same in X4 as in X5. You must press Enter to apply an inline layer name change. If you double-click the layer and rename it via the dialog box, that's not an issue because you have to click OK to close the box and that applies the name change.

Oo, clever lady, I hadn't spotted that and certainly didn't press Enter.

I haven't made Preset Shapes for ages, but was playing and then it all went wrong..

Award yourself a star :-)
