TS14.dta file

Post by lmantei »

Hope someone can help with this...I purchased PSP X4 back in Jan. 2012. I've contacted support and they could not resolve my issue and I even posted here in reference to the issue and got no replies so thought I'd make another post in hopes that someone can help.

My problem is that everytime I save an image to .jpg after having done some editing, the file is duplicated, in my Recent Doc folder, with some really strange Chinese file format characters/font. I even uninstalled PSP X4 (even going as far as removing all traces of it the registry, etc.) and went back to using PSP XI; however, since XI doesn't allow me to switch printers (reason I upgraded) from within the program, I re-installed X4. I use Spybot - Search and Destroy on a weekly basis to clean temp files, tracking, history, etc. from my computer; however, Spybot S&D is unable to clean-up the files in the Chinese as it doesn't recognize that file format; so I'm forced to clean-up the Recent Doc folder in the registry by hand.

I have not been able to find anything on my computer showing that I have set up anything in a Chinese language; however, opening up the TS14.dta file that accompanies PaintShop Pro X4, I noticed it is written in Chinese. I purchased a downloadable version via the Corel website so this is not a boxed version. I have Corel WordPerfect X5 Suite installed and looked at the .dta files associated with it and they are written in the usual English binary characters that so common with other encrypted data files. I'm wondering if this maybe the cause of the strange Chinese file format. I must point out this only occurs with .jpg files. Even when I attempt to open the file in PSP X4, it's unable to as it doesn't recognize the file format it has created.

I have been using PSP since 1993, and this is the first version that has caused me problems. So hopefully someone can shed a little light on this issue.

Does anyone else have a TS14.dta file written in Chinese?

Where exactly is this TS14.dta file located? I don't seem to have it anywhere on my system, though it is referred to in one of the Setup files...

It could be that those *.dta file are data files used for the autosave or restoring your work whenever your program crash or suddenly terminated. You should not be able to see them unless you set your folder option to show hidden files. They should also disappear when you've successfully saved your work.

About the chinese character, I'm not sure what are those Chinese characters are, may be you're using a Chinese version of PSP X4? Have you downloaded and installed the updates on your computer? If not then you can download them at http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=3000009

Abiel, these are a different thing. They are found in the Program Data folder for corel not the AppData folder where the autosave data is.

If, for instance, you change the name or delete the file PSP will refuse to open claiming that the program has been illegally modified or corrupted and you need to reinstall. So it's a very important file.

Thanks Levi. Found it. FWIW, when I opened it in Notepad, it looks like this:
EDIT: Hmmm... When I inserted the copied characters, I got an error message from Chrome saying the internet page was no longer available... So I deleted the first character, and this time it worked...

I also get that with Notepad. Though I get a regular byte-string with Notepad++. And it looks like a normal byte-string for X5's dta file regardless if it's in Notepad or Notepad++.

But I don't experience that issue with saving JPGs.

Chinese characters appearing in file-names was seen during the beta for x4. But not everyone saw it and it eventually went away as they updated the beta. So I can't explain why it's happening at all.
