Need two effects: stabilization and "ultra slow motion"

Post by wsalopek »

Hi guys,

Potential new user of X5.

In particular, I am looking for two features:

1) Stabilization...and I see Mercalli SE is included with X5...great.

2) "Ultra slow motion" or "frame interpolation", like "Twixtor".

I have looked and looked and searched and searched but can't figure out:

1) If X5 includes a Twixtor-like feature, or

2) If someone makes a compatible Twixtor-like plug in for X5.

And finally, if there is no way to get the ultra slow motion feature/plugin for X5, do you know if a reasonably-priced software that does? (As in, NOT Premiere Pro).

Thanks so much

Hi, Could you define "Ultra slow motion" - VideoStudio allows you to reduce the speed to 10% of standard - are you looking for less than that.

By "ultra slow motion", I don't necessarily mean the actual speed (10%, etc), but the quality of the video.

A program like "Twixtor" actually creates new frames between existing frames to make the slow motion appear very very smooth.

For instance, lets say I take video at 30 frames per second. I can use Twixtor to create X number of frames between those frames...making, say, an effective 240 frames per second...then, when played back at 30 fps, the video is playing at 1/4 speed, but much more importantly, looks very very smooth...no herky-jerkiness at all , like this :-

There is no function that I know of in VideoStudio to do that - neither do I know of any plug-in for VS.

You will have to use Twixtor I'm afraid.

OK Brian...thanks so much.

I actually found a few free programs.....

I came across "SloMoVideo", a free, open-source "ultra slow motion" program. Took me a little while to get it set up, but I am now creating some nice slo-mo:

http://slowmovideo.granjow.net/index.html

Another, somewhat related free piece of software that converts any video to 60 frames per second...not the same as slo-mo, but does make the video look smoother (for better or for worse):

http://www.spirton.com/convert-videos-to-60fps/

And this one too, "Smooth Video Project", though I haven't tried it (I think it's just for PLAYING videos):

http://www.svp-team.com/

And finally, something called "Fotomorph":

http://www.diphso.no/FotoMorph.html

It's another way to interpolate frames between frames kinda the way the ultra-slo-mo software works...I haven't tried Fotomorph, someone else in some other forum mentioned it as a way to achieve ultra-slo-mo.

Hi wsalopek; Just a point of interest regarding slo mo..The new Panasonic FZ200 superzoom can shoot video at 240 FPS. Your player does 30 FPS, and gives you beautiful 1/4 speed slow mo. Warren

As far as I'm concerned, super (or ultra) slow motion such as Twixtor is the only piece that's missing in VS X6. The default slow motion option in VS is too simple and doesn't provide enough quality. So either a combination of VS and Twixtor as a Plugin, or a build-in super slo mo option.

Seeing as Twixtor is a $329 program, it is unlikely that any NLE in the low price range would have any features like Twixtor, however, there are ways and means of creating slow motion video and some excellent results can be achieved with VSX7/8

I agree, it is far better to create the extra frames within the camera if you want decent Slo-Mo. I have used the Slo-Mo feature in my Panasonic HC-V750 to great effect, it gives me all the additional frames I need. Then I can slow it even further in VSX7 by stretching the timeline.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Another possibility is proDad's ReSpeedr which is currently a stand-alone program which provides excellent ultra slow motion and other effects. I bought it at a special introductory price, though it now costs US$99. However, that is a lot less than Twixtor. Moreover, VS already offers a number of proDad plug-ins. While Corel might balk at paying a licence fee for yet another plug-in, I guess they could make the decision to drop one of the existing plug-ins. My own suggestion would be Script, which I have to confess I have never used, not once, even for testing purposes! I often wonder how many others actually use it... though I would imagine more would use a good slow motion plug-in.
