Hi
any suggestions on how to avoid message 'neighbouring transition will be removed' when I cut a clip? It dosn't seem to happen everytime.

VS can be set to automatically insert a chosen transition when a project is started. I suspect most people use that and hence come upon the problem message. Even if you do as you suggest and do your basic editing first, and then insert transitions, I find it is almost inevitable that one has an afterthought (read 'stroke of genius') at least once, and wants to re-shuffle the order of the clips or otherwise play around with the layout. So again the dread message comes up. As I say, we learn to live with it.
