Proxy files not being saved.
I have a problem that you may be able to help with. I change my clips to proxy files and editing goes fine but if I am making a video that goes on over a period of time and I have to load the partly made video again the clips no longer show as proxy files. If I look in my proxy folder they are still there but do not seem to have been loaded into the edit. I am using XP.

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
I am not sure I understand your statement "I change my clips to proxy file" - how are you doing that ???
If you have "Enable Smart Proxy" checked in Preferences then when you put clips into the VideoStudio timeline which are over the specified size VideoStudio automatically creates the proxy files and adds an extra symbol on the thumbnail in your library to show it has done it - you do not have to manually do any changing. Then whenever you edit that clip VS automatically uses the proxy.
so what are you doing ?
A video thumbnail with a smart proxy copy looks like this :-

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
Hi
Proxy files "somehow" work in the background, they do not replace the clips in the timelines.
There is a small icon showing on the clip indicating that proxy files have been created.
Do you see this icon on the clips?
Hi Brian, good morning, you were quicker
I guess my image is from an earlier version of VS, seems the icon position has changed

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
Thank you for your replies.
Sorry if my question wasn't clear. First an interesting point you mention, I have smart proxy enabled and set to create proxy when size is above 352x288 but I always have to manualy create a smart proxy file ( right click on the clip >create smart proxy file), It has never automaticaly done this. Any ideas? I have been using the program for 12 months now and I understand the principle and see the the icon on the clip . My problem is that suddenly when I open an existing project the clips that were previously proxy enabled , with the apropriate icon, are now not enabled. If I go to my computer>Corel proxy folder I see the clips as a UPX file so they are still there but are not loading as such.
Since my origional post I have discovered this: I store the video files on a removable hard drive which I recently replaced. The Corel working folder drive letter was set to the wrong drive so maybe this is the problem. I have changed the drive letter now and will see how it goes. In the meantime I would welcome some comments on why the proxy file is created automaticaly.

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
Hi
1/ Smart Proxy files are automatically created after inserting a clip to the timeline.
Provided the clip has a larger frame size as set on the Proxy Manager.
2 / You can allocate a Smart Proxy folder, changing the folder may cause some proxy files to be ineffective, you may have to re-create the proxy files.
3 / If you store video files on a removable drive, the drive should be activated/available before running Video Studio.
If Video Studio cannot find files it will request a re-link, not a problem, however this may also affect proxy files, so yes changing the drive letter may mean re-creating proxy files.
I have not tested this process out, but it is highly likely that proxy files would suffer.
4 / I do not understand why you have the limit set to 352 x 288 frame size.
Generally standard definition files using a frame size of 720 x +++ would not require proxy files. Proxy files are usually for HD types that are more demanding on the pc.
If the program runs easier using these then i guess thats all that counts.
5 / If you choose to manually create a proxy file and the source file is smaller then the proxy file will not be created, the system does not give an error.
6 / Closing Video Studio before the proxy files have been created will cancel the job.

This has been covered before, and indeed the external drive must be on before starting VS

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
I have it working again now. I am not sure what the answer was but I changed the proxy setting to 720 and unchecked enable proxy then checked it again. All now works including automaticaly creating a proxy file when clip is draged to timeline.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
I have the same problem as myfordboy had.
I use X4 on a laptop computer, which has the VideoStudio program files and the project file on the hard drive, together with a USB external hard drive, which has the video clips and the proxy files.
As long as the external hard drive is plugged in there is no problem.
If the external hard drive is disconnected and reconnected while the computer is on there is no problem.
If the external hard drive is disconnected then the computer is turned off or put into hibernation mode, then when the computer is turned on again with the hard drive connected the proxy files are not linked and there seems to be no way of relinking them.
Since it takes a long time to recreate proxy files a method of relinking would be helpful.

At what point to you connect the external drive?frankmitchell wrote:.

Does Windows Explorer see the external hard drive after the computer is turned on or wakes up from hibernation?
Do you get the relink message at all?

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
Good question here!
I checked again and find that the problem occurs when the hard drive is reconnected after the computer wakes up from hibernation or has restarted.
Windows Explorer recognises the external hard drive when reconnected after hibernation or restart.
The video clips etc on the external hard drive are re-loaded correctly, but not the proxy files.
There is no relink message. This only seems to appear when video clips, still images or audio files are misplaced.

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
It occurs to me that one reason for the proxy files being "lost" could be that the computer sometimes recognises the external hard drive as drive F: and sometimes as G:.
However, this does not affect video clips, still images or audio files, which are relinked automatically, so why does it affect Proxy files?

Re: Proxy files not being saved.
Hi
If the video files are saved to the same folder along with the VSP project file, then you should be able to move all to a new PC or drive, opening the VSP will use smart re-link to recognise the files and open correctly without the need for a manual re-link.
I use a USB memory card to save an entire contents of the project usually by the Smart Projects option, I am then able to simply plug this into any PC without problems.
Not often I use HD but in this case I allocated the Smart Proxy folder to the USB card, this worked ok on both my XP desktop and W7 laptop without the need to re-create the proxy files.
I still have the files on the Memory Card so will give the project another run to see if my comments are correct. Watch this space……don’t have access to video studio at the moment.
I have to say that changing the Smart Proxy folder does seem to confuse things for existing proxy files.
