videostudio 6.0 not reading avi files

Post by jeskaeli »

I just got a new motherboard and processor (athlon 64 3000, 2GHz and 1 G of RAM), and ulead videostudio 6.0 worked fine. then I changed the letter of the drive it is installed on from D: to E:, and it said it couldn't read a .dll file (u32Clips.dll). somehow I finally got it to open, but now it won't load .avi files. They aren't listed in the supported formats, and .dvp files I've made with .avi files won't open either. Any help would be vastly appreciated.

When you change drive letters, there is a warning to the effect "Some programs may stop working if you change the drive letter"

I would change it back to what it was before and keep my fingers crossed.

 I think a complete removal of VS from your system is in order. Not just an un-install or repair, a complete removal with all the associated folders and registry keys. If you are unfamiliar with editing the registry, leave that to someone who knows as you can render your sytem unbootable if you corrupt the registry.

After you cleaned out your system and rebooted, do a fresh install of VS.

Thanks, I reinstalled it and it can open .avi files now. Except, now it says it's missing the codec it needs to open them. These are all files I ripped off dvds (and have worked with successfully in Ulead VS 6 many times in the past). I downloaded Gspot, which is a program that will define what codec an .avi is compressed with and if you have the means to view it, and it says they are MPG4 and that I have 2 acceptable codecs installed to read these files. So why can't Ulead read them? They open fine in winamp and windows media player.

I thought I recalled that they were MPG4, and installed a couple codecs in search of the exact one I used in the first place but clearly I haven't found it yet.

I am not sure how to search for the codec on my backup files, but it should be there somewhere. I don't suppose anyone knows a good way to look for video codecs on a hard drive?

Thanks again for your suggestions.
