audio problems when clipping video
The first movie I was attempting to make and I had to split it to fit on 2 DVDs. The video works fine but the audio lags by about 12 seconds. Why? There must be something I'm doing wrong because I can't imagine a major function like this not working. I have tried using my CD burner as well with the same result. The preview clip appears OK (before burning to disc). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A/V sync can be a problem. Is this the first time you're burning a DVD? or has it worked in the past?
What capture device are you using? What software are you using to split the files? What are the properties of the original capture file? Can you try authoring to a folder on the hard drive and burn as a separate step? Is the sync OK on the authored folder on the hard drive?

This is the first movie I've tried to burn with DVD Movie Factory 3 Disc Creator. I have used Roxio to make VCDs but was unhappy with the video quality.
I have a Plextor PX708A DVD Burner as well as an LG GCE 8240B CD Burner. I was using the DVD Movie Factory 3 software to break the files and when I reviewed the files after the break, they appeared OK. It was after I burned them that the second one was a problem. The movie was 91 minutes long: the first 55 minutes were on one DVD with no problems. The remaining 36 minutes were on the second DVD which I burned twice to two different type DVDs and once to a CD. I got the same result so I know the hardware is OK, the discs are OK and my player is OK. This only leaves the software.
I don't have a lot of experience with this yet but is this a common problem with DVD authoring software on the whole? Thanks again for the assistance.

Depending on the bitrate, you should be able to fit all 91 minutes on 1 DVD.
You shouldn't have to split it between 2 DVDs.
To reiterate:
What capture device are you using? or what is the source of the original files?
What are the properties of the original capture file?
What are your project properties?
Can you try authoring to a folder on the hard drive and burn as a separate step?
Is the sync OK on the authored folder on the hard drive? (It may look OK on preview in DMF. I am interested in what it looks like after authoring to a folder on the hard drive.)
Also if you render the complete file to a hard drive folder and it is too large to fit on 1 DVD, you could use DVD Shrink to reduce its size to fit on 1 DVD the burn to a DVD.
You shouldn't have to split it between 2 DVDs.

Thanks phd for your continued help with this. I also didn't think I should have to split the movie but after trying different settings (quality), the output file size didn't seem to change (it stayed at approx. 6.02 GB).
As for your questions:
1. I'm not sure how it was originally captured as the file was given to me but it is a DivX AVI file. The properties are as follows:
file format - Microsoft AVI file - OpenDML
file size - 713,796 KB
frame rate - 23,976 frames/sec
duration 5485.861 sec
data rate 128.56 kbps
video compression - DivX 5.2.1 Codec
attributes - 24 bits, 592 x 320
total frames - 131,529 frames
audio compression - mpeg layer-3
attributes 125 kbits, 48,000 Hz, Stereo
total samples - 263,318,400 Samples
My project properties:
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720x480, 29.97 fps
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Vido data rate: Variable (Max. 4000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo
...also, the "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" is checked,
as is "Auto repeat when disc playback ends"
I tried authoring to a folder on the hard drive only and the authored file has the same problem. Funny though that there are three files: one is for the motion menu, one is the movie file, and the third looks like an additional movie file that is just a bunch of broken images from somewhere in the middle of the movie (the sound is constant but it doesn't seem to correlate to the images being displayed - stills about every 3-4 seconds).
Is DVD Shrink part of this software or is that another package? I didn't see it anywhere so I'm assuming it's something else entirely. Thanks again.

I am seeing a similar problem, offset of audio to video. I followed your advice and from MF2 to disk, and when I renamed the VOB files and viewed them, I saw the same offset as on the burned DVD.
My sequence
1-record using winTVPVR 250 to default settings of 'DVD Extra Long Play'
2-Use Video Redo to edit out commercials - save each clip to an MPG
3-Import the mpgs to MF2, add a menu, background music, and burn.
where is the mismatch occuring?
thoughts?

DMF is going to have to reencode your entire movie. It is in Divx format and DVDs use MPEG. It is compressed a lot more than a standard MPEG and may have problems due to the original capture and then severe compression. Frames may be missing in both the audio and video tracks. The standard computer players can fudge for this but Ulead products and the DVD standard usually shines a spotlight on this.
One of the reasons you can't fit everything on 1 DVD is your choice of LPCM audio. This is essentially a WAV file and is considered uncompressed. Since you have the Disk Creator version, you have the option of both MPEG audio and LPCM.
First problem is DVD size. I would suggest performing this test. Cut a 10 minute segment of the file and use DMF3DC to create 3 DVD folders. One with your standard LPCM audio, one with Dolby AC3 and one with MPEG audio. In all 3 cases keep the video format and bitrate the same. For audio (all 48KHz) try MPEG-224 and Dolby-256 for rates (I believe those are fairly standard.) Compare the sizes of each folder and you will see a major difference. Also, turn off motion menus and the folder size will be smaller. Do not bother checking "Do not convert compliant..." There is such a radical difference between Divx and MPEG that DMF will have to reencode. There are also bitrate calculators out there, that based upon the settings you choose will tell you approximately how much space will be required. So you could check and compare the folder size to the bitrate calculator for an apples and apples comparison.
DVD Shrink is a free program that will reduce the size to fit on 1 single layer DVD. Do a search of the internet to locate it. It is not a Ulead product.
I'm not a fan of Divx so I don't know that much about it. There are recommendations on this forum regarding which codec pack plays nicely with Ulead search the forum and follow the recommendations. If you have one that is not recommended, be sure to uninstall it and use the recommended one from HT Chien.
Another option to consider is rather than converting to a standard DVD for your player, is to invest in a new DVD player that can handle Divx so you don't have to convert. Might save you a lot of time and effort.
I usually capture in DVD compliant MPEG so I don't have a problem with having DMF converting anything so it only takes about 20-30 minutes to author compliant MPEGs to a DVD folder on the hard drive. You may be better off converting to MPEG via an external program or editor and render to MPEG there. I have not had much success when I allowed DMF to reencode files. That's why I settled on capturing in compliant MPEG format and authoring in DMF with "Do not convert compliant..." checked. Also in DMF you don't have the option to manually realign the audio if it is out of sync.. DMF is an authoring program with limited editing capabilities. You might want to download the trial of VS8 and render the MPEG ther. reload the outputted MPEG file and check for audio sync. If its off, split the audio and video and manually realign.
Also, if you shrink the size of the file and can put it all on 1 DVD, it may be a moot point because the audio will remain in sync because you're not having to split the file anymore.
There are also free programs on the internet to convert from Divx to MPEG that you might want to try.

If you are using VideoReDo to view the files after, no need to rename them. It can import VOBs.
"My sequence

Look in the capture parameters for the Hauppauge card. Please post the parameters here. Does it say transport stream or program stream. I have heard of problems using transport stream. I personally use the "1/2D1 / 2000K / 384 audio" profile on my PVR250 and it works for me. Also for additional info on Hauppauge cards, check out the SHSPVR forum. Its a great resource.
"2-Use Video Redo to edit out commercials - save each clip to an MPG"
Are you saving the edited file as one contiguous MPEG, or are you saving each edited section as a separate clip? When you are editing, does the original clip play in sync? Did you go to the options page and select "Output for Ulead Movie Factory"? After you output the file as an MPEG, reload it into VRD. Is it still in sync? If it is not, post on the VideoReDo forum and let the author know.
"3-Import the mpgs to MF2, add a menu, background music, and burn."
Did you check "Do not convert compliant..."? How long is it taking to author to a folder on your hard drive? Mine usually take about 20-30 minutes. I also created a custom profile for a project in DMF that matches the MPEG file as listed in DMF (which can be different than what Hauppauge and VideoReDo report) Right click on a clip in DMF and select properties. Write down all the settings and create a new project template that matches in all respects except one. Increase the video bitrate by about 500. For example if it listed the clip at 4000, change the project to 4500. Make sure "Do not convert compliant..." is checked.
See if this makes a difference and let me know.

What about the audio sync feature in VRD? I was playing with it, and it seems to fix the problem nicely when I am reviewing the VOB files. If I adjust the VOB clips, and get the audio back on track, is there a way for me to burn the DVD from them? How?

Now don't quote me on this because I'm not the definitive Hauppauge expert. When I set up my card a couple of years ago I had problems with the higher bitrate captures and eventually settled in on these parameters. I also remember reading on the SHS forum to use program stream. The major difference between your settings and mine (besides bitrate and resolution) is I'm using program stream. Could you create a new capture profile using your same capture parameters but change the output stream from DVD to program?
Regarding manually adjusting the sync of the VOBs in VRD after rendering to a folder. I know some people have done this as a fix for audio OOS for their authoring programs. Usually they reauthor the DVD again and then the sync is fine. VRD has a new option to output VOBs. I do not know if it will recreate the VOB in exactly the same format as DMF created the original. (I haven't tried it yet but you've made me curious if it will work.) You could certainly test it by creating a DVD folder on your hard drive, editing the VOBs with VRD, output as a new VOB and insert the new VOBs into the folder and play them on your computer using a software DVD player such as PowerDVD or WinDVD.
The time to author to a folder is indicating DMF is not reencoding the whole file. Just curious and I think I forgot to ask. Have you installed the patches for DMF and especially the burning engine update which is different from the standard patches?
Another item which may help.:
Close DMF.

Here is the original information for the reason I had started using Program Stream years ago for capturing using the Hauppauge card.

"Set video settings as shown above. You will notice that I change the Output Stream from DVD to Program. I get audio sync problems with DVD, but not Program."
Also, regarding outputting VOBs in VideoReDO. Right now, VRD will just create blank NAV packets for the VOB. It will not be filled in correctly to slide convert the DMF VOBs. You can manually readjust sync and reauthor to DVD using DMF.
Also you might want to post on the VideoReDo forum to see if the author has another idea if this doesn't work.

Good luck,

ok
thanks phd - now that I am back at work from christmas break, I won't be able to get to this right away, but I will let you know as soon as I try it.
one other thing I am interested to try, is next time to edit the files using DMF (yes, somewhat painful) and also author them. i had no audio resync problems the first time i did the editing with DMF, and the burning too. Same settings on the PVR, but did everything within DMF. The big difference obviously is the rendering time before the burn which is so nice to avoid.
but I will also try your settings and see if I am happy with the quality.
on the VOB thing - I don't follow what a NAV packet is?
Also, with DMF, you can burn folders, or a dvd image, or to a disk. with the first two, how would one go about using VOB files to burn a DVD? do you open them (import) in DMF just like an MPG file? or do you typically burn to a folder, check to see everything looks good, and then reburn using the same mpeg component files?

-You can use DMF to edit. I did not always have a sync problem. It was hit or miss, with far too many misses. But it can work, just not consistently, that's why I switched to editing with VideoReDo. Never a reject for audio sync anymore. 100% of the files work. I do get random errors from time to time on burning DVDs but that's another issue.

-If you use your current profile and just change the stream from DVD to program, you should see no change in quality. It will just help with the sync issue. My setting is a lower quality. In the link I posted, jschefdog just mentioned changing the stream to Program. Mine is 1/2D1 and a lower quality with bitrate also.

-Don't worry about it, I don't understand it all either. I mentioned it in case someone who is more knowledgeable and is following the thread will know. Suffice it to say you can't just resync the VOBs with VRD and replace the current ones. You can resync the VOBs in VRD, output them as MPEGs, import again into DMF and reauthor again. Another user on another forum uses this process for his DVB recordings I believe. If you do decide to reprocess the outputted VOB through VRD, I would recommend preparing the VOB in the following manner to create contiguous programs from the DVD folder you created with DMF. http://www.drdsystems.com/VideoReDo/Ext ... romDVD.htm

-A lot of burning programs will allow you to copy the ISO or DVD folder to a DVD to create a working disk. For example, DMF3 has a "Copy Disk" function on the main screen. Select that. For source select "Browse for a DVD-Video folder" and it will create a DVD from the folder. (I personally use neoDVD to burn the disks. It has consistently worked with my media, burner and STB DVD player.)
-A lot of players will allow you to play a DVD folder from the hard drive so you can preview the finished product. In DMF3 select "DVD Player" Right click on the main screen and select "Media Source/DVD in HDD" browse to your folder and you're done.
