Post by stelch »

Hi
I have a windows 7 operation system and I have installed VideoStudio X5 pro. As of yesterday when I click on the Desktop icon to open the program it bring only the opening screen (the lens with the logo) and it just hangs there, it does not open the program. Any ideas guys?

I suggest that you uninstall it, then re-install it. If you get the same problem then, I'll let more experienced people offer suggestions.

Can we assume you have rebooted the computer since the problem arose? Have you tried opening Task Manager and in Processes, cancel out the vstudio entry and then retried opening VS?

Hi Ken

Yes of course I rebooted the laptop (windows 7 intel Core i5, 2.3GHz, 4GM RAM, 64-bit). This happened was I had VS x4 then I uninstalled this version and installed VSx5 pro and the problem still remains. Really a mystery.

Hi Stelios

Sorry you are having problems with running Video Studio X5, we have had several posts of a similar manner which is certainly causing me some concern.
In each case I think Windows 7 was being used.
I was hoping that a re-install suggested by Bob would do the trick.

One Guy mad eira simply gave up and reverted to using X4
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 23#p246789

Another lady chose the ultimate solution and re-installed the operating system.
---------------------------
Has anything changed on your computer, installed any new programs.
Do you use any clean-up software that may have removed the wrong files, registry cleaners etc.

Things to try
1 / Manually resetting Corel VideoStudio Pro X5 to its Factory Default Setting

2 / just out of interest check the folder ukMgrCache, is it empty or does it contain files.
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0\en-US

3 / Create a New User Account, run video studio from the new account.
This would probably cover item 1 below.

4 / Protexis has some control over running Corel programs, however would normally report an error? my thoughts are to un-install all Corel products, and remove Protexis before re-installing. This would also re-install Protexis
Do not think anyone has tried this approach.

5 / I am sure there is something we are missing

6 / Check the program permissions, just thinking out loud............

Hi Trevor

I did all what you said except and still no go, so the next drastic step would be to re install window :-( but I am reluctant to do this as it is also my work laptop and there are A LOT of things here.
Mind you now that I remember I did use a program once to clean the registry and maybe something wrong went there.

Hi Stelios

How long ago did you use the program to clean the registry? usually these programs create a backup so you can effectively undo..........

Protexis............

First check that Protexis is actually running on your pc, that it is active.

I dont know how many Corel programs you have installed, Protexis does control some of these programs, the running of latest versions are certainly controlled by Protexis.

Otherwise I can only advise that you un install Video Studio, then remove Protexis

Re-installing Video Studio will install Protexis.

If it is causing problems then this may sort the issue.

Any other programs controlled by Protexis may need a re-install.

Hi

Sorry for delay in replying, a bit busy this afternoon.........

It is a while since I delved into the pc and Protexis program
http://www.protexis.com/home/?L=0
----------------------------
If you right click the My Computer icon,
select Manage
Expand Services and Applications
Select Services
If Protexis is running it will show in the list as ProtexisLicensing V2 or Protexis Licensing.

It also shows in Windows Device Manager...........

-------------------------
The Protexis web site says that the program will be removed if all programs that are using it are uninstalled. The problem is knowing which ones it controls.

This is an extract from the help page
http://www.protexis.com/nocache/support ... %5D=remove

How do I uninstall PSIService?

If you are certain that no applications using PSIService are still installed on your system, and this service is still running, you can remove it manually by following these instructions:
1. Remove the following registry entry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\ProtexisLicensing]
2. Reboot your computer
3. Delete the following files:
%windir%\System32\PSIService.exe
%windir%\System32\PSIKey.exe

Then I found:-
I've removed it from my system, but now my software application won't work. What should I do?
You need to reinstall the application. This will reinstall the PSIService, along with the application, which will allow you to use the application again.
-------------------------------
I guess the last quote gives a bit of encouragement that the programs can be restored?
If you Google search you will find details on how to disable Protexis, dont know if this would help or not.
Good Luck

You know after reading about uninstalling Protexis, I am scared to do it as I don't know what other programs will affect besides Corel programs.
So no VideoStudio on my laptop for the time being. I will be using it on my main PC at home that is only dedicated for my editing programs.

Thank you so much Trevor for your time on this. I really appreciated it.

Hi

I can understand our concerns................

I think but cannot be 100% sure but Protexis is being used only by your Corel programs

It is quite likely that DVD MF7 will not be affected, Corel seem to be using Protexis with the later versions. MF7 may be a legacy of the Ulead days.
If any programs do not work you will get an error referring to the program being modified--please re-install?

Besides as you can gather others have tried a number of fixes, the Protexis approach has at some time to be tried.
I am quickly running out of ideas, surely a system re-install cannot be the only answer?

Difficult when we cannot replicate the problem, not that i would want that.
