No sound VHS via digital camera to computer.

Post by alanball »

Hi all, I'm trying to capture from VHS (PAL) via my digital camera into VS8. getting a good picture but no sound. I have capture from my analogue camera via the digital camera before fine. and I could hear the sound in the digital camera speaker, but with the VHS no sound at all either from the digital camer or the PC. Am I wrong in assuming that I should be able to capture via my digital camera direct from VHS?

Thanks

...and how have you got the VCR connected to your camera? If it is S-video, you need to be aware that that S-video cable does not carry an audio signal. So you need to hook up the audio OUT from the VCR into the camera somehow, or direct into the LINE-IN of your computer, perhaps...?

:? You are never totally wrong in assuming anything, only if it doesn't work. Without any details on your system, software, camcorder, connections how could we do anything else than assuming that you will work it out one day?

Thanks Ken & Heinz-oz for replying, sorry about not supplying more details.
I'm at work at the moment, not at my comptuer at home, but I'm using a Mitzibishi Black Diamond VHS machine connected via RCA 3 wire Video/Audio into my Canon MV630i digital video camera. the camera is then firewire connected to my Dell 3.0GHz pentium 4 computer with 1G Ram and as I said VS8. I have also tried connecting the Video via RCA to the camera and then connecting the sound straight into my Creative sound card from the VCR, both Line IN and also the MIC socket, no sound either way.

Does any of this info help?

AlanBall, is you camcorder compatible with the PAL vhs ? in other words is the camcorder PAL configured ? Also how are you getting the sound from the VCR to the camcorder ? And what cable are you using from the camcorder to the computer ?

Post by heinz-oz »

joosuana, that question was answered, RCA cables are used from VCR > Camcorder, firewire to PC

Do you get sound at the camcorder side? What are your capture settings? DV 1 or DV 2?

Sorry about that, just re-read your post and realised that there is no sound at the DVcam either. Are you sure the cable is correctly plugged in? Not faulty? When you connect the VCR with the same cable to a TV, do you get sound?

in the original post he said there is no sound at the camera end when connected to the vcr but had sound when previously connected an analogue camera

Cheers

Thanks bop, that does not exclude though that the VCR's sound output or this particular cable is faulty, does it?

Thanks guy's for your input.

Heinz-os, I will check the sound out to a TV, from the VCR as it's normally connected by coax.

Just one question, am I right in assuming that I should be able to copy the sound with the picture from a VCR and also should it be possible to capture the sound from the VCR via the sound card? I'm not at all sure of the pro's and con's of annolgue/digital sound. May be a preamp is required after the VCR similar to a turntable.

No, you cannot capture the sound going into the sound card at the sametime
capturing dv format from the camcorder. Not using VideoStudio, you would
need a more expensive program to do that for multi-track recording.

Your camcorder does what you want it to do. (Analog to Digital via firewire)
The Canon will put the video & audio onto the firewire cable.
(I would set the audio in the camcorder to 16bit for dvd compatibility)..
You should be hearing the audio at the camcorder (most models you can).
(Make sure the WAVE/pcm output/input isn't muted or set to low in
your windows/soundcards mixer).

Sounds like a simple cabling problem. Check the vcr's audio setup.
(Also make sure the camcorder's audio setup isn't setup for headphones).
Use different cables, try another audio source etc etc.

Hope this helps,

MD

No, you do not need a pre-amp. I do this all the time. Having said that, I now understand that you are trying to capture the sound through your sound card? I'm afraid, as stated here before, that is not possible. DV AVI files, that is what you are capturing via your camcorder, have the sound embedded, at least DV type 1 does, DV type 2 has the sound separate but it still has to come via the firewire connection.

Hook up all the cables, video and sound, to your camcorder, make sure the sound settings on the camcorder are set to 16 bit and all should be well.

Good luck

Thanks maddrummer3301 and heinz-oz for your input, problem solved.
It was a little switch on the VCR that should have been switch off instead of on. I found the problem after trying another VCR and searching the manual of my old VCR.
It sure helps to be able to talk to some one about problems, and you confimed that I was going about capturing the correct way through my DVcam.

Thanks again guy's
