Burning a DVD from a project with out the edits

Post by Ken Veal »

I have burnt a DVD from a wedding project in the usual way in X5 pro ultimate Now the Bride + Groom want to have an unedited version containing everything that was on the cam tape. What is the easiest way to do this. Will I have to capture the whole tape again and burn from that or can it be done with what is in my working folder and burn a new DVD from that content.

When you edit in VideoStudio your original captured video is not changed or altered in any way - although you may have carried out all sorts of cutting and re-arranging in the timeline your original capture is still in your working folder exactly as you captured it.

So no need to capture again just insert that original file into the timeline and create a DVD.

Do I guess correctly that I just omit the add/edit chapter stage in my workflow as there will be none on the DVD?

Yes - just ignore the add/edit chapter icon completely

Hi

If the Groom has asked for the unedited original files then you should burn these to a data disc.
This will contain the raw files not a Video DVD but a Data DVD.

These could be quite large, the final video will have been recoded to fit the Video DVD.
If the originals are tape based I guess you used a Mini DV type camcorder. Is this correct?

The files will be DV-Avi at 13 Gb per hour.

I have been asked to provide an unedited version of the DVD I made that was originally captured from my mini DV tape
tape camcorder. If, as mentioned above these files are in my working folder, is it not easier to put these in a new project timeline and burn a DVD from them in the usual way?

Hi Kenneth

A bit late for me, this machine is usually shut down by now.

If you provide the original unedited video files, those or most will be DV-Avi, they are 13 Gb per hour. By unedited i assume NOT creating a DVD video Disc.
A standard only Disc holds 4.3 Gb.

You could simply convert the DV-AVI to Mpeg thus reducing the sizes. One hour for each disc, yes you may need more than one disc.

How did you capture the footage, did you use Split by Scene or capture a single video clip.
---------------------------
If you captured a single file then it would be upto one hour long, as the tape is one hour.
Convert this to MPEG2 at 7500kbps, the file will fit to disc as a data file.

----------------------------

If you used Split by Scene then you will have lots of individual video files. Some of which would not be used in the wedding project. Would the groom require the unused clips?

Locate the clips used in the project, as I say most will be DV-Avi, then batch convert all clips to Mpeg2, this again reduces the size allowing you to add to a Data Disc.

One method of finding all files used in the project would be to create a Smart Package of the project. I had thought you had does this as part of the tests you performed curing the render fails.

Smart Package will copy all clips to a single folder, you simple delete the ones you do not need, like the images, Wmv samples etc, leaving the video files in tact.

----------------------------

You keep mentioning burning a DVD, this will convert the files as a DVD which will be similar to the wedding disc you have just completed. I do not think the groom wants the files in this format.

I keep mentioning a Data Disc, this uses the same disc but the files are copied to the disc in a similar manner as you would copy images. Un-edited raw video files.

Which ever way you proceed you first have to identify the video files..........
----------------------------------

You could of course capture the tapes again, saving them to a dedicated folder, then copy to disc

Good night.......

but if as you originally said Kenneth all they want is an un-edited copy of your original tape then just do as we originally said - put the captured video in your timeline and without doing any editing simply follow all the steps you normally take to burn a DVD but by-pass the chapters section.

There is some confusion here Kenneth - because Trevor and I have read your original question in two different ways.

Trevor has read that the groom is asking for a copy of your original video - direct from your camera in it's original .avi form - presumably so he can make his own DVD edited in a different way - I don't know why else he would need the original .avi - if that is the case then you need to sort out exactly how you give them the video - if you have 2 hours or so we are talking of a 26Gb file - how will you give that to them?

I have read that they merely want an un-edited copy to play on their DVD player - possibly so they can see the bits that you removed - in which case you just burn a normal DVD

ok, sorry if I have not made the issue crystal clear,What the couple want is an "ordinary" DVD that they can watch (only) without the edits, cuts, music, titles etc that were in the DVD they have.I have opened a new project for this purpose, gone to my working folder, opened the original project, right clicked to find where the clips are on the PC and then dragged each one into the new timeline. Two cams were used with all that each one took being in the original project. This has resulted in a 59 minute project in my new timeline which, at a constant bit rate of 7000 it should fit onto a DVD.

yes that's what I thought you meant - so now you have the two original clips in your timeline just proceed as you would with any other project but just ignore the add/edit chapter bit in the authoring/burning module.

Hi Kenneth

Thank you for the clarification, and sorry for my confusion I may have caused
Glad to hear you are managing to create the new DVD, at least it should render ok without the original error caused by the Theatre Curtain clip

good luck
