Changing Duration

Post by nocam »

Duration seems very straight forward and very simple but I am having a problem with it in VS v11+. When I set a transition, there are naturally quite a few, I want to set the duration of each to 8 seconds. I click on seconds and use the up arrow to increase from the default to 8. Sometimes it will go up but a lot of time it will not. In all cases I can get to 4 but no further.
I tried typing 8 instead of using the up arrow but that makes no differance. Any suggestions?

the maximum length of a transition cannot exceed the length allowed for it by the length of the adjacent clips/photos - if you can only set 4 seconds it suggests to me that one of the clips adjacent to it is less than 4 seconds - or you have a transition each end of a less than 8 second clip- if you wish to use a longer transition your clips must be longer. A transition effectively overlaps the video/photos by the length of the transition - so if there is insufficient length you cannot increase the transition time.

Rather than changing each transition individually why not set the default before you insert them - open ''preferences" (press F6) -and select the 'edit' tab at the top - near the top you will then find the option to set the default duration time.

Yes, what BrianCee said. :)

I would like to add that transitions between 2 files requires each of those files to be at least half the length of the transition.
So, if you want to apply a crossfade of 8 seconds between 2 pictures, each picture needs to have a runtime of at least 4 seconds.
Basically, if you're out of space for the transition to visually overlap the picture or video it can't be made any longer.

8 seconds on a transition is quite long though, but I usually create slideshows. What's your project about?

Good luck!

Thanks Ken and Brian,

I think I understand it but as I play with it I find it is a little tricky. I am new at this so thanks for mentioning the 8 second transitions being to long. I have reduced them back to 6 seconds and will probably find that to long. I am transitioning intermittently between some images and video clips of my wife around Hong Kong. Where do you guys learn these little details?
