Transition effects work on any track above it?

Post by Bushdoctor »

Good day,
I'm currently using Pro X4.

I would like to know how to use a Transition without it affecting all tracks above it?

For example, if you apply a crossfade transition to a title track to make it fade-in, it will also affect the video track(s) above.
The videotrack will suddenly turn black and then fade in together with the title.

Actually it will affect every track above the transition effect. So if you use for example the 'Switch Off' transition on the 2nd title track,
it will also switch off the 1st title track, any possible overlay tracks and the main video track.

I can't imagine this should be happening. Is it a bug on my computer or is it a software issue and does everybody have this problem?

Thanks,
Bushdoctor.

Hi

Earlier versions of Video Studio did not allow the use of transitions on Title clips.
I guess they may create special effects, for want of a better description.

DO not use transitions on the title clip, the titles can have animations applied which will do most if not everything you want.

delete the transitions from your title.
Double click the clip in the timeline -- will open the options panel
Click the preview screen to select the text
Click the Attributes tab
choose Animation -- Apply
In the type box choose Fade
Some default effects will be available however-- click the "TT's" to open further options
Explore these settings.
The Pause can be customised, set the pause duration by adjusting the slider under the preview screen, close the window first.

Blue bar editing, some details of the blue bar, title clips shown on last section.? (Think it is white for X4)

Thank you very much for confirming that and your elaborate description Trevor.
I guess I'm just a bit disappointed that transitions do work on titles but have an unwanted side effect.
In some cases I can make it work though, and your described method also offers some alternatives,
still it would be great if Corel would adjust the transitions so they only work on the tracks they are applied to.

Bushdoctor, are you putting your titles in the title track or in an overlay track? I've never tried to use transitions in the title track, as I use the animation effects already mentioned. However, I often use transition effects on titles that are in an overlay track. Most often, I use that technique to do a smooth fade in/out of the title when animation effects don't look smooth enough. In this case, I use a crossfade transition to smoothly fade the title up onto the screen and back off.

To do this, put your title on the overlay track.

1. Put a black clip on the timeline before your title and bump the title up against it.
2. On the editing screen, do a right mouse click and select "Fit to screen."
3. Click on the small blue "Options" box at the far right edge of the screen, which will allow you to see the "Edit" and "Attribute" tabs.
4. Under the "Attribute" tab, click on "Mask & ChromaKey."
5. The upper-left box (which controls transparency) should have a 0 (zero) in it. Change that to 99.
6. Grab your transition and drag it to the point where the black meets your title. Adjust the transition to the length you want.
7. You will have to repeat the process at the end of your title, if you want a transition effect at that point.

By setting the transparency to 99, you make the black transparent to the video tracks above it. Using the default setting of 0 will most definitely cause problems with your other video tracks.

That's it! It's a lot more time consuming than using title animations, but it is the only way I know to get smooth fade in/outs for titles that also have backgrounds.

Nice effect Bob

I generally use the Animation edit that is standard for titles/text, usually via the "TT's" options

The option to create text clips and move them to the overlay tracks was first allowed with X4, prior to this the method you describe could not be used.
A little more involved to apply, but the effect does seem to work very well.

I'd like to take credit for figuring that effect out, but I got it from someone here in this forum. He kinda threw it at me in an offhand way, and I've been using it ever since. I often use backgrounds under my titles, and that technique is the only way I know to smoothly fade a title in/out with a background. If you use the animation effects, the fade in/out is much too jerky when using a background. One of my wishlist items is for smooth fade in/out of titles using the animation effects... it would be much simpler for me.

That's it!! That's exactly what I needed Bob. Thank you very much.
So, in short, I have to move the title to an overlaytrack, then attach some black to it and turn the black transparant.
Brilliant!

This is what it became: http://youtu.be/UfxcwFcuU70
The problem was in the intro originally, but I managed to work around it. Still turned out nice I think.
Good thing I now have a whole new technique to play with. Thanks for your reply Bob!

There was some terrific graffiti in there... I left a comment, using one of my YouTube channels (AnnandaleArts). I like the second song, too, with its sampled guitar riff from Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man."
