Need recomendations for a quality "FireWire" PC CARD

Post by Old_Friend »

I would like to get user support and recomendations for a quality "FireWire" PC CARD to use with Corel Video Studio Pro X5. My motherboard does not have built-in FireWire support, and I've been told that by buying an external card, I can then hook-up and download video from my camcorder. I've checked on NewEgg, but the reviews I've read there for the ones customers have bought are not very encouraging. So, I'm asking advice here from experienced users on Brand Names and Model Numbers of FireWire PC cards, which are both good-to-excellent quality, and affordable choices.

Thanks for any pertinent replies.

The Firewire is only useful if you have a digital camcorder that records to tape. Do you have such a camcorder?

Do a google search for a Firewire card, there are hundreds of them out there and they are inexpensive.

I have only ever bought two firewire cards as I have always tried to ensure that any computer I buy already has a firewire port. Neither of the cards I bought had any particular brand -- they were generic cards from China. One came with a cable, the other didn't. Neither gave me the slightest trouble. So my advice would be simply to buy one that is available. They shouldn't cost any more than around $20 these days and perhaps less. As for cables, you will need one which has the small 4-pin jack at one end for your mini DV or HDV camcorder, and the larger 6 pin one for your computer.

I have always found Belkin to be a good reliable manufacturer who have been in business for quite a few years now - if I needed a firewire card I think this is the one I would be buying.

Thank you for replying, BrianCee, but what I'm hoping to receive is a reply from someone who actually purchased and is using an external PC FireWire card who has found it to be exceptional and superior to the thousands of other choices being advertised.

Here's a quote from my original topic:
So, I'm asking advice here from experienced users on Brand Names and Model Numbers of FireWire PC cards, which are both good-to-excellent quality, and affordable choices.
The keyword in the quote is the word "experienced." I can't afford to buy a dozen different brand names and models to test and determine what works best overall on my PC, including its use with VS Pro X-5.

Just like you, I've heard that Belkin is a good brand name. I'm still hoping for a reply from someone who has actually used it or any other recommendation they have (and, someone who is using it currently and successfully), and found no major issues with it (or, whichever brand/model they are using currently that works flawlessy for them). I prefer to "just buy once," with a reasonable assurance that I'll get price/performance, etc. I can think of no better way to do that than asking here (on this forum) from people who found a specifically "best" one which I can order.

Thanks again for you reply!
