KPT Plugins & X5??

Post by nhlisa »

Hi,
I have a question. I currently have X4 Ultimate installed with KPT Effects & Nik Color Effex Pro 3. I now also have X5 Ultimate installed. Now X5 came with the same Nik Color Effex but I haven't installed it yet.

Does anyone know if KPT Effects from X4 will work in X5? Can I copy the folder from X4 into X5? (Same question pertains to the NIk Color Effex. Seems kinda silly to install it again when it's already intalled to get it working in X5.)

I thought about just trying to point X5 to the X4 plugin folder but after just trying that with something else, I'm a little leary. I tried to point X5 to the Photoshop CS6 folder where AlienSkin Eye Candy 6 installed. But right after doing that and re-starting PSP, the startup box hung. I used task manager to stop it but the program still opened anyway. I knew that wasn't right, so I removed the link to that folder and X5 opened normally again. The newest installer for Eye Candy 6 won't let me do a custom install. So I emailed them to find out how to get the filter working in X5.

Anyway, just rambling...my main question is if I can get the KPT effects from X4 working in X5 and if so what I need to do.

In directory configuration (File menu) of PSP X5 add locations where are installed plugins in X4. :D

Hi and thanks for the reply.

Yes I do realize I could do that, but am afraid of doing it. When I pointed X5 to the Adobe CS6 plugin sub-folder that contained AlienSkin Eye Candy 6, X5 wouldn't start normally after that. I had to remove it to get it back to normal. Was hoping I could just copy those folders into the X5 folder and that it would work...

Hey Lisa,

Unless you copied the AlienSkin Eye Candy 6 plugin over to X5 and it started working the problem you experienced was not with pointing to that folder, but rather with the plugins being incompatible with X5.

If it's with them being incompatible then moving them won't change anything. In this case the KPT are not designed for a specific version of the software, as far as I know, it's simply given a very specific installer to make sure the plugins make it into the proper folder. So I know you're worried about it, but the only reason linking them would be a problem is if they are incompatible. And if they are incompatible then moving them makes no sense.

And if you're just going to move them, why not just install them? It installs directly to the X5 folder for you so no need for you to worry about having to do that.

Essentially, if you're worried about linking to X4's folder then moving them makes less sense than installing them for X5.

Hi Levi,

I know for a fact that Eye Candy 6 is compatible with PSPX5. I was using it in X5 up until early this week when I had to completely start my computer from scratch. I had originally installed it earlier this year when I got this computer using an older installer. After re-doing everying, I downloaded the newest versions of the installers. But they removed the ability to do a custom install from this new installer. So it only installed into Photoshop CS6 and not PSPX4 or X5.

The minute I put in the link to that folder, the Eye Candy plugins were in the list & working. I closed the program because I thought I was going to do something else. I didn't but I wanted to check something out, so I re-opened it (no changes were made at all in between adding the link to the folder, closing PSP & re-opening PSP). When I opened PSP the pop-up box froze....I used task manager to close it, and PSP opened. Which I thought was really strange. So I immediately removed the link to the Eye Candy plugin folder. Closed PSP and re-opened and it was fine.

Is there a limit to the number of folders you can add to plugins in PSPX5?

I have mine pointed to a few...one is the one that's there by default. One is for the Topaz Labs bundle. One is the plugin folder I created for PSP plugins used for both X4 & X5. And one is for plugins that are used in both PSP & Photoshop. And Yes I know that some say not to do that, but I have been doing that ever since I've been using Photoshop. Photoshop will only take one extra plugin folder. And I don't want to install those plugins into two different places to use them in both programs. So that's a total of 4 folders. The minute I put that 5th one going to the eye candy folder, it didn't like it.

As far as the Nik Color Effex 3, that did also come with X5, so yes, I could just install it again. But the KPT Effects only came with X4 and give you no choice where to install them. So I just wondered if they will work in X5 if moved...I know some plugins that have been installed, can't be moved or they won't work right anymore. I made that mistake accidently a long time ago.

So I haven't installed the Nik Color Effex for X5 yet because I wasn't sure whether I was going to link to X4's plugin folder or not.

KPT also comes with X5. You can download KPT specific to X5 from the Corel Guide. It's one of the options.

Ohhh Levi...smack me upside the head and call me silly! LOL!
I haven't had time to look at what was in that guide yet. For the first few days I had X5 installed, the guide wouldn't register. I just looked and I do see it there. Thank you! Now I won't have to worry about linking to X4's plugin folder. I will just download and install the one for X5. Also gotta check out what else is there....
Thank you!

Levi?
One more question.
Is there a way to download & save the KPT for X5? When I downloaded it, id didn't give me an option to save it. It did say install now or remind me later, but I have no idea where it would have downloaded to. I want to save it in case Corel ever decides to not offer it this way anymore...
Thanks again,
Lisa

Umm....assuming it's still there it tends to download to the "Program Data" folder.

This is a hidden folder in your C:\ Drive

C:\Program Data\Corel\Downloads\

And there should be a folder in there with the KPT download.

And for those with XP the location may be:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Corel\Downloads\542...
The numbers at the end may vary so just look at the Date Modified Column and locate the one when you downloaded the KPT filters. Then make a backup of the file elsewhere.

So it seems that you have this all taken care of!

I had X3, X4 and X5. Now only X5, X4 Trial, X3 I bought right after getting X2.
I put in KPT filters and I in X5 set the the plugs in folder to where they were.
Later when I took out X3 and the trial on X4 ran out. I left KPT Filters to run with X5 Beta before it was completed.
Well as I said it seems that you have this taken care, but I wanted to throw that in there anyways.
Cheers!
