some of the tools in the palette have multiple icon options if you click on them and only one icon is displayed based on the last tool selection made. the lasso icon can also be the rectangle selection icon or the magic wand icon (its the 3rd icon down on the tools palette). any tool with an arrow to the right of its icon has multiple selections, click on the arrow next to each icon and you will see the options.

Thanks for the respnse dwalby2. The magic wand/freehand/lasso icon is completely missing from the tool bar, I have checked everyone that gives multiple options and it is just not there anymore?? I used it yesterday and the lasso icon is always there. My 3rd icon from the top is now the eye dropper. I desperately need it and it"s driving me bonkers

First off try resetting your Toolbar by unchecking and then rechecking Tools. See the image for more help. Second you can try resetting all Preferences by going to File/Preferences/Reset Preferences. If that does not work I would suspect Windows Vista. Windows Vista was very buggy for me when using PaintShop Pro. Since switching to windows 7 Ultimate things work much better. I also noted that you are running Windows Vista with only 1 GB of Ram? That alone can cause many problems. Windows Vista is a memory pig. 2 GB of Ram minimum is highly recommended.
