VS X5 Settings/Preferences
I'm a newbie to this forum and I found alot of useful info. However for VS X5 I'm looking for a guide or tutorial that explains the Preferences Tab under Settings. I don't know what should be checked or left blanked. Any suggestions ?

Re: VS X5 Settings/Preferences
It is as the name says to set your preferences - if everything is the way you like it there is no need to change anything - I do not know of a tutorial on settings, there are no hard and fast rules, it is very much a personal thing - I have attached screenshots of my settings under the General and Edit tabs, you may or may not choose to do the same.
The simplest answer is to just ask in these forums what each function in the preferences box does, or even just try checking/un-checking some and see what happens.

Hi
There is some old info here
http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/set_up/set_up.htm
Written for VS10, maybe about time I updated the details for the later versions
Most of the boxes are still used with a short explanation. Some tabs may have changed.

Re: VS X5 Settings/Preferences
I have some questions re the settings in the General + Edit Tabs in the Preferences’ box.
General Tab
1 Auto save interval--if this is checked, can you still save work manually as you go along
Edit tab
2 Apply colour filter- -What are the pro’s and cons/consequences of checking this or not.
3 Re sample quality--- Why not use Best?
4 Image cache photos in memory --- What are the pro’s and cons/consequences of checking this or not.
5 Audio, enable whilst scrubbing-----why is this not chosen
6 Apply cross fade automatically—When exactly is this applied, does it mean when one
audio file is followed directly by another or something else.
7 Display DV time code on preview window. On checking this, the following message showed--
You must have a VMR compatible display card to use this option, if it is not, you may experience playback problems.
How do I find out if my display card is VMR compatible ...............Ken

Re: VS X5 Settings/Preferences
1. Yes certainly you can - this setting just provides for extra automatic saves.
2. Not needed these days - I believe it was originally put in when we had old fashioned CRT TV screens which could not handle all the shades of every colour available - this ensured that what you saw in VideoStudio was what you saw on your TV screen, but in these days of LED. LCD . plasma all colours can be reproduced and this is left un-checked or else VS keeps changing colours you selected to something else.
3. because best uses more resources and makes bigger files taking longer to show and good is adequate.
4. I never use it because I assume it would put the photos into memory and thus tie up memory needed for processing the video.
5. Because it would slow down the process of scrubbing - and make some awful noises as you move quickly through the video.
6. This is applied if you actually overlap the two audio files in the timeline - it is not applied if they just touch or if there is a gap between them.
7. Check it and run a DV avi file in the timeline - if the timecode shows your display card is VMR compatible - if there is no timecode then it is not.
