Paintshop Pro - Wishlist for version X6

Post by nfam »

What I'd really like is better sharpening tools. My camera, SPUZ570, generally gives excellent pictures, but I've lost a number of photos because they aren't quite sharp enough. I know this relates primarily to the camera, but I'd love to be able to sharpen photos.

PaintShop Pro - Wishlist for Version X6

Post by Ken Berry »

Every so often we have contact with a Corel employee or software engineer regarding new versions. It is always handy if we can point them to a thread such as this.

Please keep any suggestions sensible - plus this is not a place to complain about what YOU may consider to be bugs or faults. Those items should be placed in a new thread or tagged onto an existing one dealing with that same issue.

How about a completely rewritten installer, that is up to date?!
More stability and compatibility on different systems ...

I use the Precise cursor all the time. White blends into the picture too often and is difficult to see. I would like to have an option to change the colour of the Precise cursor.

Basic vector boolean operations (subtract, division, union, etc.)
New layer styles, and the ability to bring up the color selection dialog for current layer styles.
Gaussian blur as an adjustment layer (probably not useful for most but the options this would give to vector art without having to convert them to rasters)
Improve Brightness & Contrast command to lock down the black and white points so we're working on the inbetween values instead of clipping them. The current method was rejected by professional photographers for years, even in Photoshop. When Photoshop changed to this method people came back to the command.
Get the output value options for Levels back. I know they aren't used often but when they are it's usually for a cool effect or method.

1- Ability to open tiff files in layers. Currently, it is opening as a flattened image only. Tiff files are another way to share layered images, but not working with PSP.

2- Apply a single effect to multiple layers at once. Since we can now select several layers at the time, it would be FANTASTIC to be able to apply effects like bevel, drop shadow, blur, texture, hue/saturation, brightness/contrast, and basically ALL effects to those multiple layers. This would certainly make PSP stand apart from any competitor in making the workflow much faster!

3- A way to SELECT ALL the layers. Since we can now select several layers, it is a bit annoying if we want to select ALL layers. Going one by one is fine if you have 3-4 layers, but if you have 20+, it is annoying. Maybe a shortcut could be used?

4- Custom icons for bound scripts. Since most icons used for commands and tools in PSP are somewhat meaningful, it would be consistent to have icons for the bound scripts also meaningful, which is NOT the case right now, with the ordinary lightbulb, cube, gear, etc. I would suggest that icons could be created by users (they could even be included with scripts with sharing them!) so they could be more meaningful of what the script is all about.

5- Multiple brushes. PSP has tubes that can be selected sequentially or angularly, or randomly. When using brushes, although we have the brush variance that can change the size and angle of a brush, we have always the same one. It would be FANTASTIC to have the option of combining more than one brush to be used either sequentially or randomly. This would add a total new level of flexibility in using brushes

6- Way to set a "prefered method for text entry". Using the Text tool directly onto the project might be very convenient for some tasks, however, since it is possible to have the text too long or otherwise extending outside the image, it is impossible to select the whole text to change the font or the size or the kerning. Depending on the type of work one does, it could be convenient if the default (which is currently set to work on the image instead of with a text entry window) could be changed.

7- Drag and drop from one image to the other (although currently, it can be done from the layer palette) or from the tray.

8- Larger brush tips. Now, with the newest photography equipment, photos are much larger in size. I think that the max of 1000 pixels for the brushes, erasers and other tip tools was great when it came out, but it might not match the size of the images users might be working on now. This will help many users, including photographers, if the maximum size for those brushes was larger now.

9- Customizable right-pane. Some users might prefer to view the right pane on the Layer Palette. Thanks for keeping that option there. Right now, when i want to have the right pane AND have a narrow palette, the only setting i see in that right pane is the Blend mode, while i would prefer to see the Opacity level in the first place.

10- Rotate the textures. There is an option to rotate the texture in the Material palette, but none in the Texture, Sculpture, and other commands that use a texture/pattern of any kind.

11- TEXT WRAPPING. Could you consider adding Text wrapping, so one could have text inside a shape (not following a path) like inside a circle shape or a specific rectangle so one does not have to adjust manually with all the returns. This would be great so one could edit the text and still stay within the set shape or area.

12- Better flexibility in manipulating nodes in the Warp Mesh. While working with the Warp Mesh, one can use the SHIFT key to move a complete line of nodes, and the CTRL key to make a curved line. This is great, however, two things are missing:
- the ability to move a series of nodes in a straight but angled line
- the ability to move several nodes at the same time
The warp mesh is ok for warping to a certain level, but as i am working in scrapbooking, we would definitely use a tool to bend more, like a ribbon. If i want a ribbon to be bend at 90 degrees, this is totally impossible with the Warp Mesh tool.Bending/Warping more than 45 degrees is a very difficult task. Maybe a totally new tool is needed. Something that would treat the raster somewhat like a vector. (i think i saw something that Photoshop has, calle Puppet something). I am sure something like that would be very useful to scrapbookers but graphists alike.

13- Visual for the rotating mirror. The rotating mirror is a great effect, but it is a bit frustrating at times. Although the window allows very precise placement of the "mirror", it is not always easy for the user to place it precisely on an image, according to the design and the elements on the photo. I think it would add another level of usefulness if there was a guideline that could be manipulated directly on the image, a bit like the Straighten tool. Both the window (with the numerical values) and the guideline (on the image) could be used, somewhat like the Red Eye Removal tool, where one can work on the preview pane, or like the Straighten tool, that works on the image iteself.

14- Picture tubes on separate layers per click. Picture tubes are a wonderful and unique feature of PSP (dont ever remove that!). I know that some tubes are meant to be placed in a continuous manner (i hve developped some, so i know about them), but for the tubes that are a series of individual images (like the butterflies, or others) or a single image to apply multiple times, i often want to place several of them on a canvas, but i loose the ability to adjust them since they end up on a single layer. Adding a layer for each impression is a bit tedious, although i know it is feasible. Here is what i would suggest (if it is possible):
- have an option that for every click of the mouse, a new raster layer is created to add that tube
- if one uses a continuous tube (directional or like the rope tube), only one raster layer would be created PER CLICK
- once done, the user could be given the choices of "Merge the tube layers" (if the user is happy with the arrangement) or not, in which case the user can manipulate the tubes on different layers
- to make it even better (but this might be too much to ask), have all layers created with the tube, somehow identified so that PSP can recognized all of those created for one set of tube, and have an option to merge them even after the user has manipulated them. Yeah, i might be dreaming but this would be a killer feature!

15- Deformation without perspective. The Pick tool offers a way to turn a rectangle into an almost triangle, but with the perspective automatically added. Sometimes, one needs to "pinch" one side of a rectangle without any perspective. Unfortunately, the Warp Mesh is not much better to achieve the wanted effect as it always create a curved.

I am not asking for much, am i?

Those are TIFF not TFF. They are layered images, not fonts. Easy to confuse.

1. Please restore the capacity to specify the Left, Right, Top and Bottom edges of my Crop and Selection rectangles. I have been using PSP since shareware days -- Paintshop 3, PSP 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and now X4. Always before I could specify the exact edges of my rectangles, down to the pixel. This is an important feature to me, and I find it not to be present in X4. Please bring it back for X6.

2. Rotable Cut and Selection rectangles. Sometimes I come up against a foreground edge where that blends into the background. If I use a Magic Wand elector, the selection floods into the foreground object. A rotating rectangle would allow me to snug the selection up against the foreground object without including any part of it in the selection or cut.
Had PS3, PSP3; Installed: PSP-4.12, 5.03, 6.02, 7.04 (liked it a lot & used it for years), 8.00, XI, x4.3.0.3, x6.2.0.20, x7.4.0.11, x8.3.0.13, x9.2.0.7; now using PSPx10 (PSP 2018; version 20.2.0.1 x64) on Win 10-64 b2004.

Although they removed the custom crop option, it's still available for the selection tool:

And, you can rotate a selection. Make your selection then go to Selections > Edit Selection. Use the Pick Tool to rotate it.

Thank you. That solves 1.5 of my two problems. Actually, with snap crop to selection, it's a work-around. Just needs an extra step.

Native 64-Bit PLEASE!!!!!! 64-Bit 64-Bit 64-Bit Let me say that again 64-Bit PLEASE!!! With PaintShop Pro still in the 32-bit dark ages I can't process some of my really large files. PaintShop Pro is a great program, it's just very outdated as it still cannot utilize the memory capabilities, or speed, of true 64-bit systems. It's really past time to update PaintShop Pro to be native 64-bit.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Should have been a 64 bit option a few versions ago.
