X3 won't open files 1GB and above

Post by stormcab »

The previous problem I had was it wouldn't smart proxy 1GB files and above (still not fixed), now X3 won't open files 1GB and above. I tried opening files over 1GB that I have edited before, but it's not happening. Basically the files are from a Canon 5D MKII, converted to AVI via Cineform Neoscene. Today I selected about 12 clips I have just converted to AVI I filmed yesterday, and 4 of them (over 1GB) gave the following message

".... file is not accessible"

then

"these files cannot be added to this project. These files may be of unknown file format. The computer does not have enough memory, or the file is coyright protected"

Is there some restriction setting I have accidentally selected? Like I said this is a new problem, these files would open before. I've tried clearing some space on my laptop's hard drive, so there's over 200GB, but that didn't help either. I contacted Cineform, and they said their file format is the same whether it is above or below 1GB in size, so the problem lies with Videostudio.

Hi

Why are you converting the files from the Canon 5D to Avi :?:

There are some 800ish types of Avi, Avi is a container holding the video data.

What are the properties of the original Canon files :?:
What are the properties of the converted AVI files. :?:

I convert to AVI because Corel VideostuDio doesn't like to edit MOV files. Then if you do edit with them, you'll never get a smooth render. Cineform is a very well known converter used by the film industry, and neoscene has been made specifically for the 5D and 7D.

Cheers

Hi

Have you tried another compression rather than the GoPro, certainly I do not have this installed, guess I would need to buy the camera to get that.
Maybe Video Studio just does not read that correctly giving the 1Gb problem.
Also
Canon 7D Mov uses AVC H264 compression, however Video Studio does not read this correctly hence the Compression details being blank.
In fact I have not been able to create a template using a combination of H264 and Mov.

I chose HDMV to convert to, but was using 25fps, this seemed to work ok. but X3 did not give me a frame based option.

If I were to use for the internet I would convert to Mpeg4-Mov.

X5 does give more options when converting HD and able to select 23.97fps

I have some short 7D footage and have little problems playing with X5, whether longer video would be a problem. I don’t know. playing in clip mode is a bit jerky, but project with smart proxy is ok.

Give X5 trial a go to see if there is any improvement?

Downloading X5 was going to be one of my options, but firstly I want to see if I can sort this out without any further costs. There isn't any reason as far as i'm concerned that 1GB should be causing a problem. I will contact Corel direct to see if they can answer my question.

I have downloaded the trial X5, and although it does import the files, they don't play, and anything you try and do with them just freezes the whole program.

Hi

Are you referring to the Canon Mov files or the GoPro converted files or both.

Did you give time for Smart Proxy to create the files.

I don't have any MOV files to test, it was AVI. What's really weird is there was a 4.8GB AVI video file open further up on the media area. I was working with it months ago and it played fine. I clicked it just now and the whole system froze. I have been referred to Corel's tech team, emailed the problem to them, and will wait and see. In the meantime I am going to delete everything to do with Ulead and Corel off my system and reinstall. I have had a few problems over the years that no one could fix, and one was a horrible jerky video render. I did a complete uninstall and reinstall and it fixed it.

Right, did a complete uninstall - VS 9, X3, Corel Win DVD etc, rebooted PC, still happening! uploaded X3 to my wife's PC with Vista, does the same thing on hers. Waiting now for my last hope - Corel to come back with something sensible. I also imported MOV files over 1GB and they import just fine. So now i'm at a total loss as to why these 1GB+ AVI files would be causing problems.

As far as I am concerned the problem must lie with Corel - files that were converted previously and worked, no longer do. So it's not the Cineform codec, as it worked before.

Hi

I have to disagree, but then I don't have the Gopro type AVI's to compare with anything.

There are some 800 different types of AVI, so I am told, Video Studio is gonna struggle with some of them. Some types lend themselves to being edited whilst others are primary for playback.

Your problem started with Canon files, these using H264 Mov files and does give VS some trouble.
So we convert them to a more editable format. I guess Canon could do that in the first place?

I would choose the format I was intending to use for my final video.
If I were intending to create a DVD then Mpeg2 format.
For HD Transport Stream. either H264 or Mpeg2.
For the internet I would choose either Mov or Mpeg4.

By the way do you see the Cineform codec showing in the list of available AVI compressions within Video Studio.?
Hopefully Corel will come up with a solution and get this working for you?

You're forgetting one important point I have mentioned - this file format does work, if it is below 1GB in size. This what's so bizarre. What on earth happens to these files after 1GB? I also have a Canon Powershot S100 compact that shoots HD MOV files. Same problem occurs, so it's not the 5D MKII. The reason Canon don't use AVI is the massive file sizes. Once the MOV files are converted to AVI, they are about 3 times the size.

Anyway, i've had a reply from Corel, and they have given me a work around.... which has worked. I change the file extension from MOV to AVI, which means it won't play in windows explorer, but, opening them in Videostudio they work exactly as they're supposed to. So, a slight annoyance, but now I can edit away.

My best guess is this is some sort of codec issue from someone else, ie Divx or DirectX. I believe I had an issue a few years back that I fixed by reverting back to an earlier version of one of these.

Hi stormcab

Glad you have managed to find a workround.

You say you are re-naming the file extension from Mov to Avi, I assume you are referring to the Canon original files as they are the "mov" ones. I will give that a try to see if it improves performance.

So you have no need to convert to GoProCineFormCodec as they are Avi

The size of the files being 3 times bigger is because of the Codec used not the AVI, AVI is just a container, an envelope containing the video. It could just as easily be DivX, XVid, DV.

Anyway the size limitations seem to be sorted so that has to be good.

No, I convert the MOV files from the camera into the AVI cineform codec, then I rename the AVI file MOV, and they are recognised and play perfectly. You can edit the MOV files stright from the camera, but don't expect perfect smooth results. There will be the odd jump/freeze if you edit with MOV. Plus because MOV is a compressed format, it slows VS right down. People who have a top end MAC with Final Cut Pro can edit with the MOV files, but as you can understand, that's because MOV format is associated with Apple, and FCP is vastly more expensive a piece of software?
