VSProX5 and Home Movie .MPG files vs: .MOV files and others

Post by LeonLonergan1 »

Cannot preview .MPG files.

Hi every body (anybody). VSPro5 won’t play MPG clips.

I have only ever worked with AVI files, MOV files OR Video_TS files with few problems and have recently upgraded from CVSProX4 to X5. A family member has asked me to put all his home movies onto DVD. These are in MPG format.

I can import all the individual clips into CVSProX5 – however, the clips will only play when they are selected as the whole project. Selecting an individual clip for editing purposes results in a green screen. However I can manually move the scrubber through every frame within that clip (with an absence of sound) – but will not play that clip. I have converted some clips to .MOV format and can then play (and edit) and listen to individual clips.

I don’t particulary want to convert many hundreds of individual .MPG clips.

Am I missing something in the setup preferences phase?

I have searched previous posts but not recognized anything of a similar nature being raised before.

Hi

No I dont think you are missing something in video studio.
Mpeg2 files should be bog standard and simply work.

I would suspect the problem is with the files rather than the program.

Give us some further details of the original video clip.
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?

Where did you get the original footage, were they on VHS, a dvd????

Thank Trevor you for your interest.

File properties are not extraordinary - file name M2U00061.MPG (uppercase), also showing as a MPG file opening with an unknown application - a pretty basic 33,000 KB file.

Files were handed on to me a combination of data dvd's and memory sticks and were produced by a Sony Handycam. Today I managed to get the camera and a couple of memory cards to test the downloads myself. Using Sony's software I was able to download the MPG files as lower case .mpg files INCLUDING visible .mpg.modd and mpg.moff files for each mpg file. The .mpg files could be loaded into VS5 and behaved as they should have. I also downloaded the files from the camera with a memory card inserted, via windows explorer (after a bit of messing about) and these also worked as they should.

It seems that all the files had been downloaded onto a computer using the memory card port of a canon printer. There obviously seems a problem with this method (or with the original host computer). Consequently some files are readily accessible while others are long gone, but will work on conversion to .mov files.

All is not lost though, at least I can edit all the clips as necessary by directly editing them before adding them to the time line. The other alternative is to Create an output file of the project then import it and treat the whole as a clip.

It just threw me that something I had become accustomed to was not working - took me outside my comfort zone so to speak.

Again thank you for your interest.

Absolutely love the rotopen facility provided by VS5 Ultimate. Marvellous toy.

Regards

Leon.

Hi Leon

Thanks for the feedback, glad you are making progress.

If you are intending to create a DVD then converting the files to Mov is not the way I would go.
I would re-encode to Mpg keeping the same format.
I have to say the DVD uses Mpeg2 types.

Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties will show the video's details.
It is quite important to keep the interlacing the same as original.
can you post the details of the problem clips, the ones you are converting to Mov.

and yes RotoPen is quite good, only played with it a bit but impressed.
