Re-Center Image when zooming on PSP X5

Post by Brian G »

I'm currently using PSP X2 for restoring a load of 35mm slide scans, some of which need extensive spot and scratch removal.
These have been scanned as 16-bit TIFF files.

PSP X2 does not offer very good 16-bit support, so I have downloaded the trial of X5, with which I'm quite impressed.

There is, however something that I cannot seem to make happen in X5, which I like about X2.
If I zoom into my image, using the Magnifying Glass tool, on X2 the image automatically re-centres the image on my zoom point, whereas on X5 I have to pan the image to bring my zoom point back to the centre of the screen. For example, in X2, if I zoom-in on a point, say, in the bottom right corner of the screen, when the image re-draws, the point I zoomed on is redrawn in the center of the screen. In X5 when I zoom in, the centre point on the image stays in the centre of the screen until I pan the image.
It's rather annoying having to keep panning the image each time I zoom in and out.
I've looked at the "Preferences > General Program Preferences > View" settings and all the same boxes are ticked in both programs.
I don't recall ever doing anything to enable 'center image when zooming' in X2, so I assume it to be the default condition.
Can anyone suggest where I can look for a setting that centers the image on the zoom point when zooming in?

Thanks in advance.
Brian.

I'm not familiar with the setting that you are asking. But one tip that I can give you is if your mouse has a scroller roller that's usually located in between the two mouse button. What you can do is to click on the point or area where you want to zoom then just use or roll the scroller roller and it will them zoom in or zoom out, on that area where you clicked on.

This isn't a setting. It's something that happened when that came up with X4 and continued in X5. It's not a bug or a setting, simply a change in how it works.

Darn it! So it's a "feature" rather than a fault.
Thanks for the information, I was hoping that wasn't going to be the case, or that at least X4 behaves like X2.

In reply to the previous post, zooming with the scroll wheel (in X2) is another option, which I also use, but it still does not re-center the image in X5, only in X2.
When I'm retouching I frequently zoom in (to 300%) and out of the image when I'm fixing dust spots, and it's extrmemely tedious, (and time consuming), to have to pan the image every time it redraws.
It looks like it's something I will have to tolerate if I decide to move to X4 or X5, which I would like to do for their improved 16-bit support.

How do I lobby Corel to ask them to reinstate the feature in later editions?

Thanks again for the replies,

Brian.

Maybe you're already doing it, but have you tried opening the Overview (or Preview) palette? You can use that to navigate zoomed images. It always shows the full image, and if you're zoomed in it shows the visible part of the window lighter, and the out of frame part shaded. You can drag the light area around without changing the tool you're using. The pallete is resizable.

There are two sticky posts on top of the forum: Wishlist for future versions, and What you really like. Maybe one of those?

I'm not using the computer that Corel is installed on at present, so I cannot try anything.

I can say, however, that I'm using both programs with (as far as i can see) the same settings, and this does not involve using any "Preview" palette or window.
If I need to drag a window around on the image preview, that sounds like it's just as cumbersome as panning the image itself.
All I can say is, using X2 I can zoom the image the way I want, and the way I'm used to working, solely by using the mouse, and does not respond the the same on X5.
LeviFiction seems to think it's a change in the way the program works, which changed between X2 and X4.

In reply to Abiel Corel NA - When I click on a point in X5 and then zoom using the scroll wheel, it does not centre the zoom on the click point.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them when I'm back at my desktop machine.

Brian.

It looks like a bug. Whoever wanted it to be a feature needs their head examined. Maybe Corel will fix it some day.
