I sure feel like a fool. I have been using PI since at least v. 5.
Today I decided to uninstall PI XL and PI 10 and reinstall PI 10. (I had not realized that XL was still in my HD when I upgraded.) Anyway, now I can't open a graphics file by double clicking (I can do it inside PI). The error messages say:
1. Unable to open file c:\Documents
2. Unable to open file d:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 10\ and
3. Unable to open file d:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact 10\Settings\...\Desktop\[filename]
I can open the files normally when I am in PI. What have I done wrong.
Along this same line when I try to set the file type association to PI, it won't let me select ledit in the d: drive.
Thanks and I apologize for being so stupid. I didn't have this problem when I upgraded to PI10.
Can't open files in second HD

Microsoft has as Default the following; When more than one program is installed on a computer pointing to the same File association, the Open With dialog is initiated and you can no longer just click on a file extension and get the old program to open the file. You must now right click on the File extension and choose Open With and then select from a list of Programs which one you want to open the file association.
After uninstalling a graphics program that was set as Default to open a particular file, you may no longer be able to open that file type, as you have removed the Default graphic viewer. To Set File Associations, in Win XP, go to Help, search for File Associations and you will get instructions on how to change File Associations. You may also have to do the same in Ulead, go to Preferences, General, System, Associate, uncheck or check the File Associations.
When you have two programs of the same Manufacturer, of different versions on the same hard drive, they will often combine and rewrite the Uninstall File. Ordinarily you should uninstall the Newest program first before trying to uninstall the oldest, in hopes the uninstall files are not damaged.
So if the above File Associations don’t work, then you will have to uninstall PI, delete the Ulead system folders, they are in two locations, your User Profile, and Program Files. Then reinstall PI 10, don’t forget to turn off all of the Anti-Virus and other programs working in the background.
I don’t understand the following: “it won't let me select ledit in the d: drive” Is this where you have installed Ulead PI 10?

When I invoke the file association change window for the C: drive (I can open graphics files in the D: drive), e. g., Tools>Folder Options>File Types and highlight JPG or via right click on graphics file and select "Open with...", and browse to the D: location for ledit, it takes me back to the previous window without associating the file extension with PI.
I will try once again reinstalling PI.
Thanks for your unrelenting help, Keenart.

I might be missing your understanding, haven’t had my cup of coffee yet. What I meant is, when you install PI on C:\ all file associations will revert to C:\ the location of the original installed PI Exe file.
There would be no reason to try to associate a file while in D:\ as the association will always revert back to the installed location C:\ PI Exe. By Default, all *.jpg files on all Drives, will open with the association C:\ PI Exe, it won’t make any difference what Drive you are browsing.
This broad association to the Exe file can not be changed as it is a Default action created by the OS. You can, however, change to different Exe files as the Default File Association.

I guess it doesn't make any difference now, as after reinstalling as you suggested, all appears to be fine. BTW, PI is installed on the D: drive.
Many thanks again for your help AND patience.
