OK who's going to be the first to try it and give us a report?
I would but at the moment I'm too busy to even think about it.

It's available now.

http://www.corel.com/corel/product/inde ... rod4900067

I downloaded the trial, and by the time I got it installed, I was already getting Service Pack 1!

Appears to be mostly cosmetic changes, but I haven't had time to fully test.

The specs look good. Lots more 16 bit tools. Up from 110 to 167.

OK I couldn't help myself. I've downloaded it and installed it. Installation was a breeze.
So far, with a limited amount of 'play', it seems to be much faster.
Until I get some real testing done with my usual work flow then it's too early to tell. I like the extra 16 bit features. That alone should be worth the cost of upgrade for me.

So for now I'm happy. I'll wait and see what everyone else has to say.

Does anyone know what this new button at the top of most of the palettes does? I've tried pressing it and don't see any change and there's no pop-up description for it. I couldn't find any mention of it in the Help file.

Here's the Layers palette in X4:

That button maximizes the palette.

I have the Materials Palette and Layers Palette docked to the right of the workspace.
When I click on the square icon (like a window) it maximizes either palette. Clicking on it again makes the palettes revert to their original position.
Yours look like they roll up as the pin points to the left. I leave mine open.

Joëlle I think I've figured out what you mean. Rather than have your palettes roll up to the side vertically, you've got them stacked, right? I can sort of see what that button does when I've got them stacked but I haven't quite worked out how to get the palettes to look the way that I want them. How would you make the Materials palette stay visible at the same time as one or more of the others? I seem to be getting random results with that button and it's a struggle to get two palettes to be visible at the same time. What am I missing?

I somehow got the Materials and Layers open at the same time in the screenshot below but I'm not sure how I did it.

You are correct, mine are stacked, see attached.

I don't use that button at all, the Palettes are always open.
It helps that my monitor is quite wide :-)

Have you ticked Allow docking of (in my case Layers + Materials) palettes>
It's under Palettes.

Yes, my palettes are docked. I've figured out that I can get them all visible if I double-click the title bar of each one to undock it and then double-click on them a second time which adds them to the stack maximized.

I just installed SP1. During the installation it recommended that I close all open programs so that I wouldn't need to restart my computer after the installation. Did that but after the installation it rebooted my computer anyway despite the fact that selected to reboot it myself later.

That didn't happen here.
Installing SP1 resulted in the loss of the customization of the Context Menus.
Every time I re-do them, close X5 and re-open it, the customization has disappeared.
So have now added it to a custom menu on the Toolbar instead. It's still there ;-)

We now wait for Service Pack 2 ..

It seems like the major differences listed in the comparison PDF - as compared to X4 - are in the organization tools. Libraries, geotagging and geomapping, face recognition, uploading to various web services, etc. I do all my organization in Aftershot, so I'm not sure I'd actually use any of the new features. I'll wait for reviews, as I don't want to mess with a perfectly functional X4 installation. I'll probably recommend X5 to friends who want an all-in-one solution, though.

The one thing I've really been hoping for is proper multicore support. I've got a nice quad-core system that effectively runs at one-quarter speed in many operations.

I have X4 and I just got an email from Corel offering X5 upgrade for $US 59.99. Seems like a pretty good deal for the moment.

Have you tried customizing and then saving your workspace? I had the same problem with custom toolbars in X4 and saving and loading the workspace worked around that problem. It shouldn't be needed but with Corel you need to learn to shrug a lot too :)

My workspace is highly customized, custom menus, scripts tied to menus etc.
In this case it has nothing to do with customization, saving the wroskpace didn't make any difference either, it's a bug and has been reported, not just by me but others as well.
Hopefully (!) it will be fixed in the next Service Pack.
