Re: What are you switching to?
Well, i'll make sure to keep my aftershot packet somewhere safe.
As linux user, aftershot is the only decent alternative.
I had no luck with darktable or rawteerapy, darktable crashed on me every now and then, and somehow screw some of my photos rendering.
I'll most likely stick to Aftershot for i long as i can install it, and it support raw form my camera. My sister is still happily using Bibble.

I just looked at Photivo since I wanted to play with RX100 raw files. I like it better than darktable. it doesn't have a library so you need a other program for that, but you can send develop photos directly to GIMP or Photoshop etc.

Re: What are you switching to?
Currently I am investigating into LR (like the image quality, while the DAM concept of LR does not fit into my workflow) and Capture One (even better image quality and maybe more suitable as I am not searching for a new DAM function).
In fact I am doing more RAW conversions with Bibble 5 than with ASP (due to bugs in ASP with embedded IPTC keywords not copied into JPEGs).
I am very muhc concerned if Corel is able to keep the pace with Adobe after firing the original development team.

Darktable would be a consideration. But unfortunately it has the "iToy" decease. You cannot browse folders. You're forced to used the libraries. So, it's not an option. Too bad!

Re: What are you switching to?
I built my PC with a six core cpu to take advantage of B5/ASP. Been a linux user for 12 years, so if linux support deteriorate for ASP it will be bad for me. Don't wan't to switch OS, but if I'll have to I'll do it.
I can live with the current version of ASP for at least a year, but with the uncertainty by this move from Corel I am considering moving to Windows 7 and have a look at Lightroom. Not going to rush it, I really really really don't want to switch OS. It all depends on linux support and if the manage to develop ASP into something faster and better.
As the situation is now I can no longer recommend ASP.

Re: What are you switching to?
I think that the amount of linux users is only going ot increase. So, giving up on linux is out of question for me. I am convinced that someone will put on the market a product very competitive to LR. If it's not Corel, it will be someone else.larschristian wrote:... I don't want to go to jail. I don't want to be locked in, stuck in the Apple or Adobe world. But I guaranty you that I'm not the only one. This is why Corel had a great opportunity by taking Bibble and lauching it to a new level. They could get the increasing amount of linux users on their side. And if they fail doing such. Someone else will get that part of the market. And it's not gonna be Adobe or Apple or any other similar companies taking the customers for idiots.
So, we have to be patient.
For instance, the day that Darktable will have a folder browsing capability + few more features, they will be able to charge the customers & if they ask a resonnable amount (not like Adobe), they will start making money.
And who knows? Maybe we will be able to see afx and the others of the Bibble team in their forum!
Re: What are you switching to?
There's no reason you can't keep Linux and run ASP or something else in a virtual machine with your stash of photos shared up to it.larschristian wrote:I built my PC with a six core cpu to take advantage of B5/ASP. Re: What are you switching to?
I've gone completely back to Canon's DPP (which is only relevant to users of Canon cameras). ASP and any other RAW editors that I tried, not just ASP, was just an exercise in chasing tails in my experience. It just didn't fit my workflow.

Re: What are you switching to?
I believe DPP is non-destructive, but can you view history and backup even after closing and reopening DPP? I really loved DPP's simplicity and capability.df wrote:I've gone completely back to Canon's DPP (which is only relevant to users of Canon cameras). Re: What are you switching to?
DPP is really pretty basic, but I've found that if I need more than it I'll need more than ASP. To answer your question no you don't get a "history", but you can reset back to shot settings or reset back to last saved settings. You can also save recipes for if you find yourself doing the same adjustments over and over. You can also choose as many images as you like and apply adjustments to all of those images in real time, in ASP I never found a way to do that. It's also much more right click friendly, ASP's right click menu was never that useful to me. You can also drag and drop out of DPP to another folder or into another program, it just sends the raw file to the program (like Photomatix).

Re: What are you switching to?
I certainly want to see the next version, but LR is $124 on Amazon. As much as I hate the catalog, it might be the right thing to do to just buy it and start learning it. ASP is great but it's far from perfect. Time to hedge our bets.

Re: What are you switching to?
I got LR3 for $79 from Amazon just before LR4 released, then got a freebie upgrade direct from Adobe.
LR4.1 is still quite a lot slowing in terms of interface responsiveness - but the time from card download to finished images on smugmug is at least 50% faster.
That's because almost every photography related company directly supports Lightroom - and because I no longer let photo editing become a significant part of the workflow.

old Bibble user
Hmm is that (old) Bibble user or (old Bibble) user?

Re: What are you switching to?
Have a look at 'digikam'. Linux/Mac.Win. Pretty good!
Re: What are you switching to?
Well, probably I'll be back to an idea to use separate RAW processing and DAM software. As for RAW processing - there're many choices.
But my favorite DAM becomes Daminion (www.daminion.net). A very powerful, flexible, and free piece of software (for Windows).

It is crazy this feature is exclude because of a single persons point of view/way of working.
Still learning after all these years!
